I guess that opens up our possibilities a bit.
Of course, it should have the same(aprox) or close weapon system, etc, or else it wouldn't be a followup of cave story, just another game.

Idea time.
Since it's a new game, I thought that this think from the beta cave story was pretty cool and should be included.

Yep there it is. the little screen in the middle that shows a sprite of quote walking, and you can see how the different weapons, items etc. look on him.

and for a random idea, I think that you should be able to brew potions. They aren't neccesary, but they are useful, and you make them by obtaining items and putting em into a pot or some such. an example would be: life capsule + aqua regis + white flower = life potion.

and for a cool weapon, the, um, monkey blaster. :p
it has a flawed design, but is actually pretty useful, and has it's name cause you blasted some monkeys with it.

Level One - Fires a single shot straight behind of you. 8 damage
Level Two - Fires a shot both in front and ahead of you. 6 damage each.
Level Three - Fires a shot in every direction. 4 damage each.
Max - Goes back down to level one... ?

also, their should probably be some sort of currency, and weapons should be buyable and tradable.

I like to customize my character, so a gender/class select thing like rune proposed for his new mod would be cool.

Pseudo edit: arm, nother idea about customization, say, having various helpful items, such as the arms barrier, the mimiga mask, and the air tank, but only being able to use one or two at once, so you need to choose which better fits your situation to make it easier, or take an unorthodox set of items to find a few secrets.

and, atrophy? do you know what that is? the less you use a weapon, if you don't use a weapon, it's energy level decreases over time, like any normal skill would. consequences for actions, I like that. and as a counter, maybe your weapon energy could increase when you use it? but slllloooooooooooowwwwwwllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy.

and last idea, i think it would be able to combine or create weapons. Like, you go to a shop, and you can trade around pats of your guns, and stuff to make a better gun, only you lose the weapons that you made it with, and have to pay a price according to how good the weapon is. An example weapon you might create would be a polar star that bounces off of stuff (+fireball) or a snake that has it's levels switched and levels up really fast (+nemmy), or even a charge blade (+spur)

Just a (some, okay, a lot) thought.

Customizable weapons sounds great. Like you have a base weapon that determines more the bullet pattern, like Polar-Star-like, or Fireball-like, and then you can buy modifiers for it like a "Damage x2" part or a "Range +4" part or a "Max Shots Onscreen +1" part or a "Bullets Per Shot x3" (ala lvl3 missiles) part, like that. That way it wouldn't really involve coding all the possible permutations... the game would just calculate the attributes of each custom weapon based on what modifiers you have on it.

I would be willing to make the music for this. Right now, though, I'm having problems with recording music from my keyboard to a mp3/wav file. To do this, I would probably need a cable to connect my keyboard and computer, which probably won't be difficult do find. I would also need software to record sound input to my computer to a mp3/wav file. Does anyone know of any such software (freeware would be nice)?

I also am quite a good programmer and would be willing to help with that.

I'm programming it in Basic, but I can use INLINE C as well :p
So it depends on your taste.

So all points for now:

Story elements:
  • Playable characters are Sue (Human form and mimiga form), Quote and a third character
  • The research team on earth finds out about more islands
  • The research team is going to find out more about one of these islands
  • Sue is coming with the team in order to ask Misery for making her a human again
  • On this island there will be Quote and Curly as well as Balrog
  • Sue meets them
  • There will be a Mimiga military organisation who fights monsters and robots
  • Those are trouble makers
  • You will fight Robots of the same kind that invaded the Island 10 years ago
  • You will fight Mimigas from the military organisation as well

Answers to questions:
  • Who is Quote's creator
  • The organization behind the research team the Sakamotos lead.
  • A good reason why Quote hasn't his cool weapons anymore (if the player controls Quote at all)
  • Jack's Fate

Gameplay:
  • A bit more backtracking

Engine:
  • Support for additional languages
  • Fully configurable controls for keyboard and gamepads.
  • No character system, just the basic characters
  • Options to turn off music, sound, etc.
  • No vehicle, tough something simular

Weapons/Items:

  • There will be no "mixing Items" system
  • You can equip more than one item
  • Scrollable inventory is in
  • Better upgrade system (About 10 levels, or even more)
  • Buyable and tradeable weapons are in
  • As well for weapon modifiers
  • There will be no mixing weapons system, but there are modifiers for making changes at the bullets for example, you'll see

Misc:

  • Mr. Little getting drunk
  • Baby Mimigas

hrm, another idea.
I think enemies or bosses should drop items that help you, aka armor, instead of just energy and hearts.

i think ten levels is a bit much. like, way to much. It would just be annoying trying to level up everything.

and whats wrong with making weapons/what is your replacement idea?

Can you do it in C? I am really hoping for a PSP port one day. Also I would recommend that you get Kage to help with the story.

What's everyone thinking for weapon design/ bosses and enemies? I guess I'll post an ideas:

Enemies:
Illusion Bat

Flies around, and at random times, creates lots of mirror images. If one is above the player, it dives, and all of the other ones die. Else, a random one lives and the rest die.



Clone Bat

Flies around, and at random times, duplicates itself.



Land Bat

Walks towards the player, and when he is range, jumps at him.

Bosses:
The Life Soul

A static boss that just floats in the center of the screen. It takes the appearance of a beating heart. However, it summons streams of minibosses and is only vulnerable from the top, so to get to it, you have to jump on those fish blocks featured in Julians King. Yeah…



The Death Soul

A static boss that just floats in the center of the screen. It takes the appearance of a still heart. However, it tries it’s best to kill you with every spell ever thought of, and will raise the water level. Like the life soul, it is vulnerable only from the top.



The Rebirth Soul

A static boss that just floats in the center of the screen. It takes the appearance of a blackened heart. However, it will cause various things to come to life and try to attack you. Like the other souls, it is vulnerable from the top.



The Essence Soul

A boss that just floats in the center of the screen, however, it enjoys teleporting. It takes the appearance of a floating silver flame. It spews streams of fireballs in all directions, and likes to create mirror images of itself, which also spew fireballs. Like genesis in jenka’s nightmare, blocks appear and reappear a lot. Thankfully, the essence soul is not just vulnerable from the top, but the previous three bosses may have led you to think that.



The Wall

A huge moving wall, that moves really slowly. However, it is pushing you into some instant death traps, which isn’t fun, and there is a basil on the floor that you have to dodge. And as you get closer to death, basil will be even more annoying. Also, there are some enemies in this room. Don’t let them distract you though, because you need to give the wall your all, or else it will kill you.



Oh, FYI, the life soul turns into the death soul, into the rebirth soul, and then into the essence soul. It would be hard. :D

And, um weapons?

Shard:
Normal weapon, but it explodes when it hits a wall. the pieces may or may not bounce.

Tracer:
The shots stay at the point where you fired them, and when an enemy gets within range, they fly in it's direction.

I may help with music too :p (k I know I'm not that great, nor average, but at least I'ma liking doing it. Great if I don't have to stick so much to Org tho)
But Xaser would be a very great guy for the job, and Wedge too.

But whyain't Metal even mentioned there? not have three guys for the job instead of just one? :D

Work in progress... it's based off the Core, although of course we can use whatever size and layout of spritesheet we want... but it gives me something to start with. Not sure if I want to add anything to the back; gonna start on the sprite with mouth and eyes open now.

Actually I'm gonna start on that after my fingers stop hurting. ><

Didn't we already try something like this? ...Multiple times? 'Cause they all worked out so well >_>;
Anyways, I'll probably stick to my ususal debugging-playtesting of the release, I don't feel very creative atm -_- Though I'll try to kick it up a notch, no need for spoilers when everyone already knows what's happening :p
Seems like there's already a lot of interest in it so I think I'll wait around and see what the first release (IF there's one <_<) is like, surprise myself a bit.

Is this sequel supposed to be based on a Hi-tech theme or just normal CS. I mean, how many seconds/minutes/hours/days/weeks/months/years/decades/centuries/aeons have passed since the happenings in Cave Story itself?

I feel that we need to know... (and if this was already posted somewhere in this thread, Im sorry cause I'm in a rush right now so, lols) So that we know how weapon ideas and equipment should be like...

I mean, you wouldn't want to be holding a club when there are photon lasers zapping your ass off would you?

I hope there is a way to reseal Misery with a curse or just make her selfish or whatever. I just can't imagine her in the good side, it's sort of a repulsive idea. :p

Oh and:

I think it'll be a good idea to kill off a few important/beloved characters like Quote or Misery. Sad I know (:D), but it does sound a cool plot idea to me. @_@

Make Misery somewhat like Itachi in Naruto(yeah I know, lame manga, but the whole Itachi part is somewhat original)

this, however, is cliche, where you just randomly kill any character in the story.
Just don't create too much new characters(if any) to prevent this I guess.

To produce "sadness", just make some betrayal plot or whatever hopelessness or sadism or revival of evil(the doc and Ballos) etc.

The third character must be Curly.

Also, there could be team-based gameplay. It would be like that Labyrinth part where Curly helps you, only characters have unique abilities (for example Curly - MG flying, Sue - PC operating...) and you can change characters all the time.
