COLOR STORY
(Yes I know that name sucks.)

This is my first mod that isn't just a graphics change.

Story
There was once a world, that was full of vivid colors.
Until something made the world grey, and later, black and white.
The story follows a boy who has found himself on a floating castle, little does he know that his actions will restore the colors in his world.

Note: This log was made with 0.3.5, so vagueness about older versions is inevitable

Info about the prefixes:
!:Important notes. Best to remember.
+:New content! Yay!
•:General changes and some misc things.
✓:Small fixes, mistakes happen!

[0.4]
(Wee, the six rooms update!)
!It is possible to keep playing with V0.3.5 saves, but a missable thing in an earlier area will be... well... missed.
+Added the six sub-areas.
+Added a room after the Main room.
+Added a new boss(that isn't a cs reskin, yay)
+Added some secrets, shhhh.
•Changed starting air from 100 to 40.
•(I probably missed some things oops.)
-Removed one secret(for r e a s o n s).

[0.3.5]
(Main Update Version, yay! Lots of small changes!)
!It is unadvised to use save files from previous versions.
If you do, you might miss life upgrades and also the grayscale change.
+Added the Main Room, which leads to 6 different upcoming sub-areas.
+Added the first sub-area, but isn't yet accessible.
+Added a new secret.
+Implemented the Infinite Mimiga Mask hack, allowing for a greyscaled mychar to be added.
+Added a few new sources of health, you might or might not notice this.
+Added the file you are reading right now.
•The title screen's area now actually looks like the Underside like it's supposed to be.
•A few small balance changes.
•A few small area changes to generally make everything look a bit better.
•The Underside boss is now heavily nerfed as it was way too tough.
•An already existing secret is now easier to reach, but it's effect is halved.
•The bats and critters in Unknown cave no longer drop EXP, for obvious reasons.
•Instead of a sign, the first heal sign itself will tell you that it heals.
✓Fixed some grammar in most dialogues. Although some dialogues still make me cringe.
✓Fixed spawning under the door in the Underside boss room.
•Maybe some other things I forgot.

[0.3]
(The Underside Version, longer area!)
+Finished the Underside(second area), ending with a boss.

[0.2]
(First Boss Version, now with a boss!)
+Added three new rooms, finishing the first area and starting the second area.
One of these new rooms included the first boss.
[0.1]
(Initial Version, everything needs a beginning)
•Not much to say here, the mod was a 5-minute thing in this version.
Known issues
•Intro dialog sucks, my opinion though.

Please let me know what you think of this.

Oh, totally forgot about that.
Whatever the case, it's fixed now.
EDIT: So apparently not.

Okay, I found the problem, it must be fixed now.
I swear I won't be touching font color here for a while now.

I never knew that drawn to life 2 had a story... Anyway, here is the review!
Alright, first off, I like the intro music. It's really good. Next, I would say to either make a cut-scene to go along with the intro, or make it a level. Something like that. Next, make the first cave's music additions a bt quieter, because they're a bit blaring. Anyway, I like the concept!
Thus finishes my review.

It has a good amount of polish and I found it fun. Other than that, it was pretty short, even for a demo.

I like the option to skip the intro cutscene. Did you ever think about animating it? You know, like adding in some visuals to go along with the text? That would make it much more engaging. The song that goes along with the introduction is pleasing and fitting :)

I did notice one spelling error though. Kinda minor and you probably would have caught it since it sounds like you were planning on overhauling it anyway : p
p210010-0-nuhrr4s.png

Happened is spelled incorrectly ; )

I don't think I really like the First Cave song. It sounds kinda... jarring I guess? Like the tone in the intro song is emotional and soft sounding, but the remix of Gestation doesn't feel like it flows well after. Not only that, but the additions seem too loud and almost a little ear-grating. That's just me though. The level design is pretty standard so far. Nothing really to comment on because it's so short, but I do like how you hid the life capsule. It's made so that you wouldn't necessarily guess that it's there, but the momentum of the jump carries you into the non-solid blocks.

I have a question about the progression of the game. As the player completes more of the game, will more colors get restored to the areas around you? I think that would fit well with the story and give a nice sense of progression :)
Overall, not too much to judge right now, but everything is presentable and looking good so far. Good luck!

I think it was about restoring color or something. I dunno, I haven't played it since it came out. I guess it really doesn't matter tho

I don't think I really like the First Cave song.
I made a new version of the ORG that feels a bit more softer, I hope it will be better. I'll add it in the next update.

the intro cutscene. Did you ever think about animating it? You know, like adding in some visuals to go along with the text? That would make it much more engaging.
I would say to either make a cut-scene to go along with the intro
I'm having thoughts about doing this, but I am kinda new to TSC IMO, especially around the animating section.
I guess I should experiment a bit with it.

Also, thanks for the support.

I think it was about restoring color or something.
I think it was, I saw something about the game and I think there was something related to that.
It didn't inspire me here in any way though, I think that making Monostory was the biggest inspiration.

I have a question about the progression of the game. As the player completes more of the game, will more colors get restored to the areas around you? I think that would fit well with the story and give a nice sense of progression
You are actually right, that was exactly what I was planning, were you looking through the data folder or what?

My suggestions for the ORGs:
  • It sounds empty. Try adding a bit more meat to it.
  • It also sounds somewhat out of key, it may need correcting.
  • The opening is really bland and boring. Try adding a more interesting melody.
  • Use instruments other than Wave 00. There are much more interesting and tasteful Waves than that one.

  • Rework the entire melody. It's really grating on the ears and doesn't really work with the rest of the track.
  • Get rid of all the crap that isn't included in the loop. It doesn't need to be there.
  • The bass and melody tracks are out of key with each other.

As for the mod itself:
  • AH FULLSCREEN ABORT ABORT ABORT.
  • Normal Cave Story title intro... alright.
  • I'm playing Color Story, not Cave Story.
  • Multiple grammar and spelling mistakes. Also, one TSC mistake with the text.
  • You could make the Intro more concise by combining and rewriting sentences.
  • SELF NARRATION I hate it. But that's just a personal pet-peeve, I hate seeing personal pronouns outside of speech.
  • Color Star description is broken. Also, it's not very colorful. It would make more sense if the shots were rainbow or something.
  • Those critters really sneak up on you with the palette change.
  • You don't need to justify the short mod. Just say it's the end and be done. Also, lots of grammar issues in the sign.
  • Remove the sign, set the door to read the "mod end" information, and have it reset to the Title Screen when it's done.

Not bad for a beginning mod.

Not to be stupid or whatever, but the lack of color doesn't really help with a gun that shoots rainbows.

What do you mean? I'm not understanding what you're saying. It's called the Color Star shouldn't it be colorful?

All the colors in the in-game world are gone, the weapon itself is made to channel the powers of color to release a beam. This is kinda impossible if there is no color.

both color and colour are accepted spellings of the word in question, unless you mean to say that we aren't spelling the title correctly seeing as it is COLOR and not color

----
-why is this in a .RAR? I never understand why anyone uses winrar when you can easily make a zip by rightclicking. its not much of a problem but its a lot easier to have a zip that opens the folder after its done extracting so I don't have to fish through my downloads folder.
-you should probably change the config to windowed for this reason:
Demo contains bright images due to the difference in black and white, if you get tired while playing this, I recommend setting your brightness a bit lower.
-the little intro before the menu screen is the vanilla... and its the same color as the vanilla
-the sprites are harder to look at but, again I'm sure as one restores the color, things will improve.
I see even in a colorless world even without shading, that blood is retains itself (when you shoot the critter, the particles that fly off of him from where you hit are still red. I can't tell if this was purposeful or not, and it doesn't necessarily have to be changed)
-whats barely there in level design isn't that bad
-the edits to the first cave theme don't really fit, but if what you plan to do through the mod is to have better music the more you restore the color, I suppose that would make sense.
-you may want to check spelling of a few parts

"Color" is the American spelling, while "colour" is the British spelling.
