Made a couple of developments, but I found out that Maiden Abyss (they made their own GB port a while ago, but it got canned) is starting work on their port once again, and it looks amazing!
Should I continue work on this port?

Done a bit of work and even released a demo on my YouTube channel, but I want to finish it more before I release a demo here.
Have this absolute buggy mess of a screenshot

Thinking of another reset, development isn’t going too well

I want to make the mimiga village map bigger, cutscenes may not play out as intended if the map is small

Might end up having to decrease sprite detail to work around a tile limitation. Since quote uses a layered sprite, GBStudio really doesn’t like that
EDIT - Turns out I just had some pretty redundant spaghetti code in for particle effects, so that should be fixed now

This isn’t a port anymore, this is a demake!
I (obviously) can’t do a perfect Cave Story within the limits of the Game Boy.
Also, should I remove Quote’s layered sprite for shading? It seems like it may take up space.

I'm a bit late but this is something I'm really looking forward to. I am friends with Skittles/Maiden Abyss and I'm also pretty interested to see what you got for this demake too!

Always favored the idea of mixing the final and Beta CS together, not gonna lie.

Thank you for your reply!
Sadly, this is no longer a beta continuation, as I thought making a whole game boy game specifically to make a beta remake would be a bit dumb.
This is more or less a demake of the final game now.
I have been messing around with the idea of rebuilding the beta in programs like GDevelop, though.

That's fine. Still got this thread on watch either way!

Good luck on your demake and other projects.

GBStudio finally added slopes, this is directly after I remove slopes from most of my games after realizing there is no way that I can add them without using triggers

A lot of the music in the game decided to corrupt, is this enough to reset over, or should I suck it up and redo the music from the ground up?
EDIT - Most likely going to reset anyway, because there’s a lot of major things I want to do and GBStudio has a seizure whenever I want to add stuff

For compensation as to how much I’ve reset this project, I’ll release a new demo as soon as I possibly can tomorrow

Here it is!
Extremely unfinished, but I think it will do a good job showing you all how this is going to look now!
Developed in one weekend [I’m tired].
Edit: Video

Dammit, I should have started the thread later…
But this is a serious project that I want to make to prove that some sort of demake is possible, post date aside, and also because I just think it’s really fun (slight sarcasm) to work within the limits of old hardware!

Fair warning - Removed the Evil Door because I can’t get its collision to work correctly

I'm not familiar with GB Studio (and these seem to be "the thing" of late) but if I were to make a suggestion for what to focus on it'd be really trying to get the physics more accurate, at least for jumping

The exact values can be looked up in Booster's Lab or something, even if they can't be transferred directly over Quote should only be going just high enough to clear three tiles, unless you want to redesign the whole game around something different but the first cave isn't really giving that impression

Very impressive demo, but it's even a long way from the old unfinished GB port at this moment, hope to fight against Balfrog in your port one day OvO

Really thinking about adding some petty crap where if you get the bad ending your save gets deleted
I don’t remember if this happens in the original game or not, so I’m probably just making myself sound like a fool by saying this

Not gonna sugarcoat it but, I'm surprised nobody's done that yet with Cave Story.

Also Pixel's not that smart with his own TSC, so that doesn't happen in the game at all. Not even in the ports!
