I'm going to make a BYOND game of Cave Story, continuing from where
the original Cave Story left off. And Abu shall help me =). Maybe Sauce too.
Sorry if I'm sort of copying Shining's Cave Story "2" Mod, I was just thinking
of making a small Cave Story game at first and if we get into it well enough,
it will turn into 'Cave Story BEYOND' <3.

I shall update as to where it's going and if I give up on it =/) hopefully not.

although you all do know how bad I am at BYOND coding. : ) (no you don't,
but trust me, I'm nothing compared to Abu and Sauce ;3.)

If you want spoilers, I'll give em in red so as not to spoil it for people who
don't want to know it. (and even so, I'm not spoiling the whole game anyway)

It will use the original sprites of the game, and some new. (a new weapon
too, if all goes well.) Screenshots later when I start the mapping process.

I wouldn't mind helping, as Shining hasn't really been saying anything to me about Cave Story the Crowned Witch(Check his site by clicking his Name when he posts and click visit Shinings Homepage) I could help with making maps as I can do them pretty fast and they look good.

yeah well, I'm a pretty long way from making the maps, it'd be nice if I had other
coders lol. I'm gonna have to find codes to help me put in the weapon and health
system before I start making maps. not to mention make icons of the games tile and
background sets. I think the game is going to go kinda slow though, so I don't think
it's gonna be a very good game.. the code I used when I tried the game I jump too
far. I was thinking of a code like in that one super mario byond game. That was a very
good platforming code, you jumped, then you moved forward however much you
wanted to.. it was perfect for a game like this.... I'll have to see about finding it, or
have Abu try and use a code he used in a platformer. (he says he made a sonic game
for byond a while back?)

but after all that's done, I shall get started working on the maps and the story =).

Edit: I found the code. Now it's a lot better, so you won't keep dying if you
play it <3. Not like you can die. I haven't made any monsters yet. However,
that doesn't mean I haven't finished the health bar :) . I finished it at 9:00
or so and so now all we need is to add enemies that kill down your hp, and
weapons to kill them with. (and make it randomly choose whether the monster
drops an experience triangle or a healing heart =). yay <3)

I'll put in a screen of how it's doing (the map isn't how it's gonna be in the
final version though) sometime tomorrow. It may be blocky in byond, but it's
easier for me to figure it out than it is for me to figure out Sue's Workshop or
Miza. (how CONFUSING lol) So huzzah =D. *Balrog comes down , I hop on and
we fly out the top of the forums, accidently destroying the banner*

Question is.....

How did you create a weapon from scratch/completely new?I think thats impossible.

It isn't impossible, it is just hard to do. Look around the forums for changing weapons. If I am correct, the game weapons are actually hard-coded in to the game. It could be possible to change damage and ways of firing but it would be harder to make a new weapon.

I don't think you two get it. This isn't a Cave Story Mod, this is a game based on Cave Story for the BYOND game system, which is a system allowing people to easily make games that can be played online with several other players at once.

Nora, two things:
1.ZOMG USINGSOMEONEELSES CODE!!!... okay, just kidding. I'm just still sore because I got in big trouble from the community back when I used BYOND about 2 years ago - they thought that experimenting with an old version of FFL was treason. :)
2. Saving is EVIL! I never ever understood how saving works. It's just way too screwed up.

BYOND huh? Want me to help? I've worked with other people on making icons and whatnot, if you need any just ask :p.

Correct! this is true. it's for byond. (check out www.byond.com)

Also, I actually was wondering about if people would hate me or not. =(

and saving IS evil. it tis. I'm asking Abu to help me with the saving code,
as he managed to pull it off. He let me use the code he used, but it doesn't
work. It doesn't show any errors, it just doesn't work... Kinda strange. It's
like dragonspeak all over again =/. (even though I know ds... but still.)

and Neonlare, I may need help for ripping some cave story floors and such
to byond icons. (it takes me forever to get it to where the floors will work well
together) Can you do that? (minus the Outer Wall ones, I'm getting those
covered already) If you don't know how, you just need to go to the game's
folder Cavestory/Data/Stages/ and find the .pbm files of stages, rename them
to .bmp files and open them in paint, then put them into byond icons. I ask
again, could you help me with that? If you need my email to email me the
icons, I can provide it. =)

and so, I await an answer ^_^.

actually, it won't go online well. no picking chars, ya know? you'd all be quote..

however, after CSB is finished, Sauce wants to use the coding and make one that
can go online with character customization where you can be a robot or mimiga.
it won't have the same story as CSB though, cause making it online would mess the
story up bad. it'll just be something like they send mimigas and robots to clean up the
island by destroying the monsters.

So one will be like my idea of a sequel to Cave Story, and one will be an online Cave
Story game where you just have fun. ^^

Wait, so you're making a single player BYOND game?

People play those? :p

And come on. Just change their icon and they could be King if they wanted too.

hey, if you like a game enough, you'd play. I played through that Super Mario byond
game, and I like to play HHR whenever I can, even if I can't host it.

and there will be an online one... but I just wanted to make a cavestory game, and I
stink at Game Maker and I can't figure out sue's workshop at all. =/

I agree though - how hard can setting up a character selection screen be? Just disable characters as they are picked by players and change the sprite to whatever someone picked...

I've never used BYOND, but even something as primitive and sub-par as RPGMaker2000 allows stuff like that. It's not like there's much of a point in having a single-player online-only game... scores, maybe? Or do you have other plans? A decent gameplay element could make this interesting, I suppose.

Well, no the way BYOND works is that the player is a single object. One of the object's properties is it's icon, or sprite. It wouldn't affect how the player behaves.

BYOND can be online or offline. The whole thing is, it's pretty bad for offline games. The main reason people make single-player games for it is easier for them since they know BYOND more than another system. His game will be offline, and he's thinking of making an online version.

I actually started trying Byond and it is interesting. I hate that you can slide around in some games though. Whne you play in BYOND look for SBDjango. :p

Ohhhh... Well, I never used BYOND, but I'm assuming it's more or less like just about every game-maker type program out there. Thanks for enlightening me about the mechanics of it though, I thought it was for online games only. :p

I suppose it's a matter of wether the script language makes this easy or not, then. Doesn't sound like it'd be something terribly difficult (ie, no messing around with which resource file is loaded, keeping track of IDs and bounding boxes, etc like with a programming language) but I suppose it also depends on what the intention is (ie, if there's a storyline, picking a character would be a lot of work..)

yeah, I don't know how to use Sue's Workshop or Miza, I don't really feel like having to
look at the list of commands, and don't want to have to hack deep into the game to
add completely new weapons and junk.

if there was an editor that made things even more simple then I probably would use
one, but that's just me dreaming right there.

and I'm a girl, btw. =p

oh, and back to character selection, yes, with a story, it is hard to do. Abu is doing it
in his game Ham Ham Rivals (which it is an online game) where you can choose to go
by one ham-ham's part of the story or even add your custom ham to the game. (which
he needs to make it where custom hams have a story line to go by so they can finish
the game too, not just people who choose the regular hams.)

see how adding a custom ham to the game messes up the story? that's why I will do
an offline one with a story first and then do an online one with a smaller story and
character selection/customization.

That's what I thought - having stories in online games is a real pain and requires a lot of thought and planning. I suppose you could have branching storyline points depending on who you pick, but that doesn't seem to be within the scope of your plans.
