omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg why is the word gay being used as an insult? is it wrong to be gay? i'm gay, i'm happy, what's wrong with being happy?
Being gay isn't wrong.
But being happy is.
Mhm.
By the American constitution of rights, you have a right to "the pursuit of happiness", not to actually be happy.
Therefore, happiness is wrong.

Warning! Necrobump in progress

BUMP

Stupidity aside, there is a reason for this bump - CS Wii: Will the Beast Fang be used? Will Pixel create a mini sub-plot featuring it? Will it be left out completely? Will this thread get locked for being so ancient? Stay tuned to find out!

On another note: Gander at Ye Vintage Forume from Ye Olde Time - Behold the ancient evil known as Jcys810. Marvel at the dark-red font of a DragonBoots forgotten. And gasp in awe as the secrets of andwhyisit and xristosx are revealed.

Also, if this be not locked, would this fit in thy Theories section?

I doubt that they'll put it in. What Pixel giveth, Pixel can taketh away, and he at some point decided that the beast fang was not needed, so he just tucked it away. I guess that's sometimes easier than pressing the delete key.

Yeap, that's why you can always find tons of neat removed content hidden in a game :D;
I remember that in Super Mario Galaxy, in like the first Toy World, there's a complete third train just hidden under the very first platform you start on.
Never bothered to delete it, just tucked it under....

Mmm, and in one of the spyro games for the Playstation, there's a glitch by which you can swim through the air in one of the levels, and you can fly around to the back of the map, into a cave where there's a minigame they never finished. Unplayable, unfortunately, but it's there.

On a slightly more ontopic note, I'd totally leave it in on purpose. Do you think Pixel did? Just to toy with us?

I hate to link a TV Tropes article yet again, but this page covers the practice of leaving unused objects in games. So, no, I don't believe that the Beast Fang has any relevance to the final game. Though that begs the question: How would you use the Fang? As a proof of killing the beast? Or as a bomb-making material?

Oh man, I can just never get enough of stuff like this!!
The gaming world of "What if"'s, compounded by lost content fascinates me so...
I spent around 2 or 3 days just reading about all the removed stuff in the Mario series :rolleyes:
Thanks to that link of T-Jack's, I'm going to be busy for awhile :D;
Also, look! They even had Cave Story:

Cave Story has an item called the Beast Fang, which can be made to appear in Yamashita Farm using a game editor. It seems to have no use — but then again, so do a number of the other items that do appear in normal gameplay.
But, back-ish on topic-ish, since the only entity in the game that was set for that item was in Yamashita Farm, that's where I believe it was suppose to originally appear.
That eliminates 'proof of killing a beast' or 'using it for bomb material' {Unless Amaya planned for some major backtracking or surprise super enemy..}
There's practically nothing to go on besides that, so that just leaves us with guesses >.>;
Assuming it was suppose to be simply a appear a block above it's current position {Because, that's how Pixel seems to have hidden all his unused stuff. Just putting it a block into the ground, like the Pixel Cat}, if it were to have been implemented, I don't think it would have been hidden very well at all, since players typically go that direction for the Life Capsule, and the Fang would've been right there in the water, sparkling... {It's the sparkly entity that it's set to, btw, further adding to the theory of it appearing in the Farm}
That means it probably wasn't going to be a secret {but useless} item, like the infamous underwear or lipstick.... {Because, that's rather not secretive...}

Though, there is one idea I like to play around with... {I'm already planning on using it for my mod, so I suppose it's a sort of spoiler....}
Whenever I think of the Beast Fang, I'm reminded of the Lion-Head shaped doorway of the Hermit's cave.
Maybe there would've been a locked one, with a fang broken off, and the Beast Fang would've been the key?
I only remember the Lion head used twice in the entire game, so that seems like a sorta random and underused object{/doorway} that might've had more of a purpose.....
There's practically no real proof for this theory besides the two being rather similar {Beast Head and Fang?}, but I really like the idea....

Every time you link tropes, you kill Noxid's work ethic for two hours :s

I like your idea, but I think the link between the stones and the fang is a little too vague, specifically because of the item text, something along the lines of "Could it's owner still be around?". Pixel's not one to drop false hints like that, so it probably had something to do with an actual monster in the game. Mmm... beta musings... don't belong... won't happen...

Um, anyway, I bet it would have been used to initiate some sort of plot point, kinda in the same way the silver locket was. Maybe that was the original "Silver locket", and he changed it because the locket is more meaningful, symbolically (at least, until you forget you have it >.>)

Of course, this assumes that it was translated correctly.
(Who knows, then. It could be anything.)

That said, IIRC one of the other 'lost items' (Debug Kitty on the Outer Wall) has some lines of text along the way of "I wonder how far I'll get".
Which suggests, to me, that the game is actually unfinished(!).
Perhaps Pixel ran out of time (or patience (or ideas)) and simply summed it all up with an ad-hoc final run through hell?

And as for Lowell's idea re: Lion Head Door/Beast Fang Key: Sound thinking, but the only instances of that door are in the first cave (gunsmiths room) and the Drain (which does 'lock' to the extent that you can't pass until /after/ the core fight). Though, again, delving into realms of possibility, I seem to recall reading about an unreleased map ('Cook' IIRC) that lead between the waterway cabin and Jenka's house... Perhaps the Beast Fang was the key...?

Ps. I am immune to the powers of the Tropes! Muhwahahahahaha!

I respectfully disagree. That line was referring to the plantation, which was his originally planned final level, but then he had some more ideas or something and made the balcony, and Hell, etc. There's other hidden "tester messages" that (I think) support this, although I don't have the energy right now to dig em up.

When pixel says his game is complete, it's complete. He practically started from scratch a few times just cuz he didn't like it, or so I hear.

In cave story 3d if you have two or more save slots, one in the prefab building, and one in mimiga village, you can go on the one in mimiga village and head to yamashita farm. When you get there, open the inventory and exit the game, without closing the inventory then, open the file with the prefab building. Close the inventory and go to the bed leaning to one side. If you did everything right then when you inspect the bed, it will say there is nothing, but then you get the beast fang. Its description says "how did you get it?"

On that note, in the 3DS version, because the position of the Beast Fang is different (technically), it takes away from the original intent of the Beast Fang. We at least know that much from the information we have. I'll show you what I mean:

The meaning of "Yamashita" is:

Japanese: from a common place name meaning ‘(one who lives) below the mountain’;
Source: http://genealogy.familyeducation.com/surname-origin/yamashita

The Yamashita Farm is located below the mountain. What mountain? The mountain in which the Red Ogre lives inside a cave. See the connection? (Sorry guys, if this has already been pointed out elsewhere) Pixel did a TON of stuff with names actually having meanings that lined up with the game's content.

This may have been stated before in this topic, but I didn't have time to go through all 14 pages and I didn't get anything from a search (though I didn't have time to be extremely thorough). Anyway, we know that the fang is from the Red Ogre, as confirmed by Pixel, which is shown here: http://www.cavestory.org/forums/threads/4458/.

It definitely isn't a coincidence that the Beast Fang is in Yamashita Farm. Obviously the Red Ogre lost it somehow and it possibly fell down from the mountain and made it's landing in the Yamashita Farm. Perhaps Arthur knocked the fang from the Red Ogre when he fought him in the past. I'm not sure on that part. All I know is that the location was thought out and it wasn't just randomly placed there.

As Dunc said, that's fairly common knowledge. However, thank you for sharing that anyway. At least it's in a thread where it will help serve a purpose, so thanks for having a little common sense. :)

Hey that's not common knowledge at all. I didn't know that, and I'm common. In fact, it sounds like one of those fake glitches that kids in the schoolyard would hoodwink you with before the internet existed. Is it a 3DS-only glitch, or is this a thing in the actual Cave Story as well?

3DS only, Cap'n.

Pausing and then quitting the game from the inventory, and then loading another save file will temporarily mess up object flags. You can use this to hoodwink the game into giving you unlimited Life Capsules, any items, or causing strange things all over.

There's actually a faster way to get the Beast Fang, I've found out, that only requires 1 save file. Save in Egg Observation Room and do the glitch in Yamashita Farm, then go back and (if you don't have it yet) check the missile launcher chest. The way I found it is rather simple; I looked in CE for the script line #0300 (Beast Fang event) and looked for a matching code in other rooms you can save in.

This has made me realize that Nicalis hondonked a lot of Cave Story fans into buying another broken remake, as opposed to another remake with acceptable functionality.
