Missing an eye?

Eh, I don't think that can be a bloody eye socket, anymore....
If you check the Cave Story artwork from Pixel, you can see two identical black slits for pupils in both of Ballos' eyes, meaning that it's just coloured red.

..Although, the red eye seems to be looking slightly further down then the white eye....
....Ballos has....LAZY EYE? o.o;

EDIT: Oh, and when I was browsing through the Cave Story sprites for my mod, I noticed that Ballos' Priest form gains pupils, for both eyes, when you've dealt enough damage to make him transform.
And I think I noticed what you meant, Boots. Ballos' eyes change position when he's standing and switches directions, but they'll stay the same if he's charging/falling, even if he changes directions....

 

But still doesn't explain why his eyes in his first form switch depending on his direction.

This one's easy, assuming you mean what I think you mean. Pixel probably drew the sprite facing one way, then flipped the image horizontally to get the opposite direction.

What about the times he doesn't change his eye positions, even when his flips directions?

I mean, his eye that's in view of the camera is always white when he's charging, no matter if he turns around....

I would be most honoured if this was the case.
But how the heck would Pixel (in Japan) know about a teenaged white kid from the West Coast of Canada? o.o
