Yeah, I though it was just the 'style' or something... I always thought it was a little weird, but I never considered it could be a scar.

Hatching, damn so that's how you call it in english. We call it Strich (Shtrich, sounds german I guess?) here in Lithuania. Try to make it that the hatching lines follow the form of the object. This will create a 3D effect.
