• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Alternative Save Files

Right, I pretty much joined just to get this question answered.

I want to play Cave Story again, but I also want to keep my current save file intact.

After exploring the forums and website, I've gathered this is done by simply making a copy of a file called "Profile.dat".

Also, by reading the readme in the Cave Story folder I can apparently find this file alongside said readme.

However, there is no Profile.dat.

In fact, there's no Profile.dat anywhere.

So, am I missing something? I couldn't find any answers using the search feature so I conclude this hasn't been a problem before. Sorry if it has been asked previously.

What operating system are you running? If it is Mac then you will find that profile.dat is stored within the executable.

Wrong.

If you are on a Mac, do the following:
  1. Open the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.nakiwo.Doukutsu.plist" in a text editor. (In case you don't know, the ~ represents your home directory, which has a house icon.)
  2. Look for "<key>Profile.dat</key>".
  3. Copy everything from that line down to the next "</data>" line into a separate file.
  4. Save.

Now, to restore that particular profile.dat, all you have to do is open the file again and replace the existing profile.dat with the one you just saved.

Does that make sense?

In that case, it'd be the profile.dat. ;) If it's not there, then maybe it means you haven't saved a game yet? I dunno...

Anyway, Andwhy, what about adding those instructions to the website somewhere?

It's supposed to be in the same folder as the executable. Of course, you need to have saved at some point for this to apply.

Maybe you have some sort of weird setting set on your computer that makes all "*.dat" files invisible? Idk.

What I see:

diph.php

And of course I already have a save file. It's still on the point just before Sacred Grounds.

if you really have a save file, then vista must be putting your profile.dat probably somewhere in your documents and settings for your particular windows username...

Just do a search for profile.dat on your entire computer :D
If you want to hunt for it manually, I'd guess something like :
your harddrive letter/Documents and Settings/Your User/ one of these folders lol

I'm not on vista right now so I can't look up the correct names... just guessing...
I think it might be doing this because, I had another game where it was saving, but it wasn't going to the program files/game folder/ directory, instead it was being saved in an entirely different area of the computer thanks to vista security stuff

Aha! Found it. You were right; it was lurking in some random location in my user folder. I found by spending 10 minutes trying to make the search feature scan the entire computer instead of the bits it wanted to... which would explain why ealier searches failed...

Ok, thank you for your help.
