Should be much better now. Not quite perfect, but getting up there.
Project info here.
Release details here.
Have fun and all. Check DXdata/generic.lua for scripting info, go to ZTaimat's #Doukutsu for direct help from me if anything seems missing or outdated.

Risto, CS is a fine tuned and well balanced engine...
A 1000 dmg Polar Star would defeat the purpose of playing.

Just because you have the tools to do something, doesn't mean you should.

Besides, for every point you increase the PS's damage, you'd have to induce and equivalent change in the enemy sprites or the energy required to level up...
I'd figure 1 hp for each enemy for each damage, or add an extra +10 to the level up energy per level.

This is a reconstruction of the original cave story that allows you to mod it with ease and also will allow for cave story and mods to be easily ported to any system (that means cave story mods for mac, psp, linux, etc.) and also allows for online play.

A better explaination:
Echidna-san said:
This isn't just another mod of Cave Story with the same old enemies and the same old weapons and the same old characters in different maps using the same old tiles.

In fact, it might not be considered a mod at all, as the goal of this project is to prevent most differences from normal Cave Story.

What is it, then?

The Echidna Tribe presents... Agora's Legends.
Minnasan Monogatari. Everyone Story.

This is a complete engine rewrite. Designed with extensive moddability and compatibility specifically in mind. I am taking the useful tables, object-specific programming, and so on that was in the executable, Doukutsu.exe, and turning them into their own separate files.

All of the weapons and objects (including the player) will be programmable using Lua scripting. New objects will be able to specify the sheet they use such that the object can be used on any map, regardless of the map itself specifying the necessary sheet.

New Org files can be used in your maps, new sound effects can be played by your scripts, new and epic boss fights can be produced. This is everyone's story.

What that also means, of course, is that everyone can play it. On any system they like, as I am coding it in such a way that it will be easily ported. As any character they like. I intend to keep characters and weapons separate from mods, though the mods may choose which weapons are available and if you are forced to use a specific character.

The size of the sprites in the character sheets will be per-character as well. No longer are you limited to tiny 16x16 pipsqueaks. People will play as Balrog. In fact, I already mentioned that the player's programming can be changed. You can make your character behave however you like. You can fly around like Misery shooting off magic beams every which way if you wish. I will not limit you.

Most importantly, though, I wish for everyone to create and play together. Thus far, I have been coding on the trust that you, the English-speaking Cave Story community, will use the power wisely. My last gift to you in Agora's Legends is that of netplay. The ability to host and join networked games together, where each client determines what their character is doing and what other characters it effects and what NPC scripts run for them. This is still only a little more advanced and complete than weapons at this point, I still have a long way to go in very many aspects of the project, but I hope for many good things to be had as a result already.

Unfortunately, I fear that everyone in the community has begun their own rendition of this project in the time between when I began myself and when I announced it. Thus, I may be forced to do everything on my own, and when that happens I can no longer guarantee this project will ever fully meet these ends. For now, all I can do is leave you a link and hope you will see. I will be keeping my own forum and the website up to date on the project there, for anyone who joins me...

The Echidna Tribe welcomes all.

Extract the zip and copy the data folder for the original english cave story into the Agora's Legends folder.

very good work you did there.

it´s only one thing that i wanted to say, it´s i´m playing on a QWERTZ keyboard and the thing is that i can play only with x (jump) and z (shoot). so a config to edit this would be fine.

i don´t know if you wanted to do this later, but i only wanted to say this.

EDIT: opening a server whenever i´m online

I'm impressed! Once I figured out where the data folder went [I put it in dxdata first... figured it out after a minute], then I was treated to some familiar sights..!

This is the first time I've tried Agora's Legends, and it wasn't in multiplayer yet... and I think you've done a fine job so far, from what I've played. So, I'm adding your site to favorites :p

And will keep checking in on the Echidna Tribe~

One quick question... because Vertical Slopes are broken, is that why I lose all momentum and get stuck on the cieling in first cave, right outside the starting point area; right above the first spikes found on the ground? I don't recall nearly dying there in regular Cave Story...! Gotta stay alert.. lol

Yeah the slopes are broken on the roof causing you jump through the ceiling and hit the side of the next not-so-passable tile and blocking your way to get past the spike causing you to fall on the spike and die.

Hmm, if I am successful in connecting, would I be automatically taken to something? I tried connecting, and I am brought back to the Main Menu like nothing happened.

If you fail to connect to a server, it throws you back to the title screen. I lack a means to display the error message at the moment. Otherwise, it would start a new game, but with you connected to the server.

Everyone's jumping is probably off because it seems to be a lot slower in AGL than normal Cave Story. Needs more tweaking, play around with gravity() in Generic.lua and the jumping stuff in obj150.lua if you want to try.

the noob: You're not the only one with a strange keyboard, that's why config.lua exists. Open it in a txt editor. You should be able to change the keys to nearly anything you can press on the keyboard, z and x are just default.

Can you config it to work with a PC joystick/controller?
