A question about sprite modding... Sorry SP

I know you said not to post questions in the mod section, SP, but it is a question about modding so tell me where I DO post it if you want it gone.

So here's where I am. I used Cave Editor to make .bmp the default sprite format, because I can't look at or edit .pbm. Now I'm trying to change some sprites in MS paint.

So
1. Must a sprite take up the same amount of space as the original? I paint over it exactly, though that won't work for my main character

2. Can I copy and paste?

3. What is the deal with the black background? Do I set the background color to black when I erase, or do I paint it over black? And will black show up ingame, or as see-through?

HALP! When I substitute an arms.bmp that takes up the exact same amount of space (paint over the guns in the exact shape, ctrl+z when I mess up) into the game, I get the wonky ff#@$^*^&%#f error. I am running it on Vista. PLZ HALP!

First, dont bump.
Second all qs go in rom editing/hacking.
Third we are home, this is just a stupid question. (soz mean, even though it is)

Now,
Black is transparent in all of the sprite sheets, so it has to be your bg color. if you want your sprite sheet to be transparent. If you want your weapons to be surrounded by funny colored blocks, good for you, go ahead and change the BG color. The reason that you get the noob error is because you need to use a hex editor, either to add in (C)Pixel at the end of your sprite sheet, or to change doukutsu.exe not to have (C)Pixel in it anymore. You can copy and paste, and I'm not sure about the space. Don't think so though.

And, oh, use the search function next time. :D

Edit: Anyone else noticed the sudden influx of new members?

I dunno. The icon was a blank sheet so I
foolishly
assumed I couldn't. But I have to use a hex editor TO edit the image?

Err.... There are lots of guides on how to edit spritesheets all over this forum. Just type sprite editing and the whole list of fdgsf will pop up. -_-
