Yep! Without the manual I'd have never got past the first cave. Didn't think to go back and talk to Nancy when I couldn't get past the flooded tunnel. :) I managed everything else without the manual though, but it does mention that you can get grenades, as well as trade the gold bar for two...

I too have finished the demo up to the core part and it looks good so far. Osmose: I've got 21 health, check the high corner of the for another capsule if you've only got 18.

Ya, just stand against something and push the stick (or arrow key) in the direction you want to see more of. The screen won't center on your guy and instead will move off in that direction for a bit.

Ahh yes... The super missles. :) Does anyone know how many it takes to kill off his last form? Edit: I watched a couple speed runs and it only takes 9 lvl 3 missiles to kill his last form. Only 9! With the 54 I've got, I should be able to kill off all three forms. :)

From what I've seen, for the third form, getting in the eye is most definatly the best way to finish him off. On the third form, what weapon do you use to close all those revolving eyes befor he becomes vulnerable?

Yea, that's how I finished his second jumping form. Except I wasn't careful and got yanked up into the bats. :) I'm going to give it another couple dozen goes tonight.

Sorry, I was using the word mod to mean a modification. It isn't a full game mod, but it does allow you to edit the basic profile and weapons(such as limiting the ammo for the snake.) Right?

Ah ha! I see what you mean now. :) A disassembler, not a hex editor...

I want to eliminate all noise(music and sound effects) from cave story so that I can listen to my own music and other audio while playing. Runmaster, if you could post a screenshot of what your hex editor is seeing when you are disabling the Direct sound, I'd be very thankful. :)

So this can just handle the basic mods like editing the amount of ammo you have and such?

Bah! My hex editor only displays sets of 2 numbers and or letters. Kinda like this, but on and on. 8b 48 78 83|c1 01 8b 95| I was able to use it to edit my weapons and health, but apparently this is over my head, thanks for trying to help though. :D

Ahh, that'd make sense then... Now that I actually thought about it, it wouldn't be possible to go through the last level with the machine gun only, because of the black wind.

Hmmm.... I got to balos's third form last night. Knocked off all the eyes but one and then I managed to get stuck underneath him, losing my last 10 health. :D So close, cause after that last eye, I'm sure I could have demolished him to nothing with the missiles. And how on earth do you not use...

So how do I force the direct sound to fail on creation? What do I have to change in the exe? I can't just mute the speakers, because sometimes I want to listen to other things at the same time. Also, what program are you using to edit the exe? It doesn't appear to be a normal hex editor. Thanks...

So if I went into the .exe, and replaced all instances of 0x0008F940 with 0x00000000 Cave Story would have no sound? Hmm.. I can't find the 0x0008F940 with my hex editor? Is it in the main exe?

I see what you mean, but when you're renaming profiles every other time you play it starts to make some sense. It really only is practical when you've got a couple profiles that you use all the time such as a hell run and a 3hp run. With those two exe's I can have fun racing the clock at one...

I like the health/xp bars, but the loading sign is kinda hard to read against that backround. Then again, you only see it for a second or so.

If you're like me, you probably have several different save files for Cavestory (low hp run, at hell with spure, with snake ect.) Here's a simple way to get your .exe to reference a different save file. Simply open the exe in your hex editor, search for Profile.dat, and change it to something...

There are three endings, get the booster 0.8 and fly off with Kazuma, get booster 0.8 and beat the doctor, then the most popular ending(booster 2.0 and ballos.) I think he's done the second ending and is going for the 3rd.
