Does anyone know who or what the statue at the top of the balcony is depicting? My head canon is that it's a depiction of a younger Jenka trapping Ballos in the Blood Stained Sanctuary, probably made by the mimigas of the past.

Yeah. I revisisted my heartgold copy a couple of years ago and i kinda had the same experience too (including ampharos lol). The DS era was just the superior era, and it cant be bias because i played heartgold on the 3DS.

Great analysis dude! I think you are right in everything except the fact that I should try doing it with in a weaker state. I personally believe that the game sould create fun challenges and not the player. Still, I recently started an hard mode playthrough, so I'm kinda gonna do it.
