It shouldn't be. I've died way more in the Last Cave than the Hidden Cave.
(I played the Last Cave that wasn't hidden so I could wear the Mimiga Mask and watch reactions. Such as Misery saying "That's Hilarious!")
Anyway, did they do that on purpose, or is it just me?

It's probably because you chose not to get the booster back from Momorin (she would've taken away the mask and given the booster back). Without either of the boosters I'd imagine that the cave is hard, if you don't have a machine gun to level up.

I kept the Mimiga Mask on purpose so I could see the ending sprites and character reactions... And when you keep the Mimiga Mask it's not the Hidden Cave, it's just the Last Cave.

If you have the 0.8 you take the normal cave. That's what he's talking about. It's easier with the 0.8

You also get the normal cave like so:
You know how Sue's Mom takes your booster away until the rocket is finished? ( I had Booster 2.0) Once the rocket is finished, don't talk to her, she'll take the mimiga mask back and give back your Booster. (2.0 in my case). I didn't do that, so I went into the normal cave. I also finished the normal cave after many tries, and got some altered dialogue.
See:
"Momorin Sakamoto trades your Booster (whichever one you have) for a Mimiga mask
in the Plantation so you can communicate with the locals. After she and Itoh
finish the rocket, you're supposed to talk to her again to trade back so that
you'll have your rocket for the final challenges of the game (and this is the
only way to explore the Hidden Last Cave and the Sanctuary/Sacred Grounds.
However, you can choose to ride the rocket up to the Last Cave before talking
to Momorin, robbing yourself of the ability to Boost but giving yourself access
to several hidden easter eggs. You'll face the normal Last Cave even if you'd
had the Booster 2.0 up to this point, though even it can be challenging without
a Booster at all. If you make it to the final bosses, much of the text will be
different, especially from Misery and the various caged Mimiga. To top it all
off, during the ending, a couple of the hand-drawn Pixel artwork detailing
Quote's adventures will show him with the Mimiga mask in the areas he was
wearing it, and Quote's sprite will keep the mask during the entire ending!"

ANYWAY...
Why is the normal cave harder for me than the hidden cave?

Because you're supposed to go the normal cave with Booster 0.8? Without it the cave is a bit harder. And the weapon you choose (Polar star, snake, machine gun, spur) can make it a lot easier/harder.

But I still think that it's just you. I'm pretty sure they didn't make normal cave harder and hidden cave easier on purpose.

There's some fans that activate in the normal cave with the mimiga mask, but that's the only help you get without the 0.8 in the last cave. Those go with 0.8, but you have a hovering booster

I noticed that... But I didn't know that they wouldn't turn on with the 0.8.

Did you know that it's possible to enter the Hidden Last Cave with the mimiga mask (it's not possible to get trough it without a Machine Gun, though)? I'm pretty sure it's impossible to enter Hell by doing so (and no chance to get trough it without a booster 2.0), but it's quite possible... I think that to do so, you need to save Curly and get the Iron Bond before you get the mask (I don't know if the order to do things is important), as well as having the 2.0 to begin with.

The credits shows art of Quote wearing the mask??? I didn't know that! I'll go remove the dust from my hidden_maskProfile.dat at once!

First time for me maybe the hidden last cave was harder than the normal one. Now they are equally very easy after playing CS so much.

I actually think the normal Last Cave is way easy, even with the Mimiga Mask.. I just did it in like two tries a couple weeks ago on the Wii. Though having a controller that good (for wii or an equal-quality one for PC) makes everything a lot easier..

It's been months since I played the original Cave Story, and even longer since I've been to Last Cave.

I think both caves are hard, but the Red Demon is too easy. I didn't even get hurt.

I actually play better when I use a keyboard than when I use a controller. Probably due to the time it took to get through hell, but my fingers are more used to it. Also it's way easier to spam the shoot key and use the jump and shoot key at different times with the keyboard.

Plus the D-pad on the wii remote was so small, ended up actually boosting in the wrong direction a couple of times because of it.

Last cave (hidden) is easy though, I've been through it with 3 hp min items. Regular last cave is even easier, but not having the booster 2.0 makes a big difference.

It's all about using the uphill he starts by to your advantage. You can easily stand in such a place that all limbs he hurls when standing on the ground immediately hits the uphill and disappears, giving you valuable time to spam fireballs.

What gives me the most trouble is the Presser Corridor [when on low HP runs]. The best trick I've heard about is to get to the Point Of No Return, then jump and boost mid-air when still under the ceiling.

====================

By the way, I'm at 8W-4 in SM All-Stars' The Lost Levels. That game is probably the most difficult game ever. DM Hell stops rivalling it in difficulty somewhere in World 5.

That was originally intended to be the sequel to Super Mario Brothers (it was in japan), but it wasn't released as such due to its "difficulty" and because it was very similar to the first. This is the wikipedia article on it if you are interested.

[EDIT]: I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that it was so difficult, it wasn't even RELEASED as the sequel. But enough offtopicness...

And last cave seems really easy, especially since you'll either have the nemesis or the blade which are both very powerful weapons. That last corridor with the presses messes me up to when I try to do a 3 hp speed run since more often than not I'll try to shoot a blade at one of the critters jumping at me, but instead it will hit a press falling behind me.
