So we all think Cave Story is a great game. But what do you like the most? What makes this games different than the other games?

What I think is awesome, is that the things you did in the past, have effect to the future. Like when I came back to the first cave, and the guy said: "It wasn't even done yet. Could make something really cool out of it."

It certainly isn't Sparta.

I think the best part of Cave Story is Curly's  face.

The best part is the level design, and the physics. Pixel did a great job with both, and the level designs look very natural and well thought of.

The subtle beautfy in the level design, and the music. The gameplay is great too, but the graphical and musical aspects are truly what made me love this game.

The bosses, the old-school graphics, the unique weapons, the unusual enemies, the epic music... let's see..

Cave Story is a good game not only because of its individual qualities. If any one game had some of these qualities, it would be a good game.

But, Cave Story is one of the most famous freewares of all time. When I look at the game's overall design, I feel that no aspect of it was really rushed or finished too fast. Pixel didn't make Cave Story so that other people could appreciate his game making skills. Pixel made games because he loved videogames, and that's why games should be created in the first place.

In Cave Stort, there isn't a single aspect of the game that says "boy, this didn't have much effort put into it."
Each part of the game has exactly the same amount of work being put into it, whether it's the music, the sprites, the story, bosses, level design, or something else, no part outshines the others, because they are all equally amazing.
So no, I can't tell you my favorite thing about Cave Story, because I think that all of it is the best part.

The thing I like LEAST about Cave Story would probably have to be, well, the story. Of all the parts of Cave Story, it is the most mediocre I'd say.

Also that puppy fetch quest D: Back and forth through the sandzone...

What really drew me in was the characters and the story, nothing has really drew me in at the level Cave Story has in that department. Especially how the game feels so innocent and lighthearted at first, but then it actually gets pretty dark.

The characters for the most part are very, very flat though. The only exceptions are maybe Misery, King (maybe) and Sue (maybe). Most of the other characters don't really get any development. Sure, they're memorable, but flat as cardboard I'd say.

This was an element of the story that I did appreciate, since this is where the story actually became interesting, rather than the protagonist just going after the big bad Doctor in an almost stereotypical fashion. Granted this moment didn't really change that, but it added some depth and was the beginning of showing that the game wasn't just rainbows and happiness.

The story was good, it's just my least favorite part. I think it could've been done better.

Well I don't need a literary analysis to decide for myself that I found the charracters lovable, do I now? :\

You don't, but it's nice to have characters with some depth, isn't it?

It's nice to have a discussion that doesn't involve questioning and criticizing peoples' views, isn't it?

I'm not questioning and criticizing anyone's views, I'm expressing mine. Is there something wrong with that?

Yeah. There is.

Besides, you said "the characters are very flat" not "I think the characters are very flat" anyway. Yakkers has his own views.

IMO a lot of the characters' depth comes from more than just their dialogue. Almost everyone in CS suffers to some degree over the course of the game, and many had even before it started. There might not be a lot of explicit backstory, but the amount of dialogue already in the game is just about spot-on. Too much more and it would have started to get bloated.

Also I'm inclined to be nice to CS because there are a lot of games/things that spill out dialogue and backstory like a floodgate and still manage to have all the characters be boring as shit >_>

Oh god yes.

That's one of the things I like about Cave Story. It doesn't have too much story. Having a lot of story can be a good thing, but sometimes it just gets in the way, and can bring the game to a grinding halt while the game reads you a novel.
