I was editing some CS sprites in MS paint (horray for being cheap) and when I opened up the game all the colors were in gray-scale.

What did I do wrong?

Ms paint fucks up the colors in 16 and or 256 color bmp and , it's best to save as a 24 bit bmp, or use another program like paint.net (which is free)

GraphicsGale recently became freeware, so I'd reccomend using that.

You should probably just save it as a .PNG and then convert it to a 16 color .BMP in a better editor.

why not just use the better editor in the first place

Good point. Personally I just prefer to use MS Paint first because the editor I use takes a bit longer to use sometimes depending on what i'm making.
