WarZone 2100 is a freeware RTS that is ridiculously packed full of research upgrades and building options. You get to design your own units, and it is available on pretty much every OS ever.
It is nom, and it has online mode.

I wouldn't mind setting up some matches for these here forums, if enough people are interested o:

i remember, like way back when i was like 7 or 10 or somewhere in there, i played this at my mom's house on a demo CD that came with some other game.

this was back before it was open source/free, so i didn't have the full game until recently

because peer-to-peer architecture vs. Vent/TS server-client.

Sounds like balls. When did you use it? And with Skype, don't use it with fullscreen games with slow internet. 'Cause that's balls too.

^if this is a)saying that Vent/TS server-client architecture sounds like balls, then you completely missed what i was saying. if it was that b)Skype's Peer-2-Peer style sounds like balls, you're right.

^never have, never will, use skype.

I don't exactly understand why you hate skype, especially if you've never tried it. Realistically, there isn't much that will be affected by any slight lag or less than perfect sound quality (skype sound quality is usually pretty good actually).

EDIT: But jeez Hintak, try to comprehend the post before you respond to it.

Landon has a pretty valid point there. Don't knock it till you try it :mahin:

Ventrilo and Teamspeak were designed for gaming. did you never stop to think that the reason everyone uses them for that is exactly because they're made with gaming in mind?
Skype is a phone on your computer.
Ventrilo and Teamspeak are VoIP clients for voice chat.
for that matter, if you can't convince me i'll use Skype for anything but the minority of my time that these (proposed) games would consume, i'm not installing it. i have too much crap on my computer already, thank you very much.
/me at least did research before he started talking.

I would like to rephrase my previous fail post. It is true that Skype is usually not used for gaming, as a good connection is required for the host of a conference call. If one does have a good connection, the conference will have near perfect quality. Lag is usually very minimal. I'd don't like using TeamSpeak because of server inconsistency, as well as security issues. Ventrillo is okay, but lag is very common.

The main reason Skype is not used for gaming is that it would require exchanging of account names, setting up a conference, ect. It doesn't work for many types of gaming.

I agree with Mal. The only advantage (when it comes to gaming) Skype has over Teamspeak/Ventrilo is the fact that most people have skype these days, and few bother installing Teamspeak/Ventrilo.
