1: An "escort mission". In the sand zone you must bring the puppies to jenka.
captain obvious to the rescue
but the thing is, most games where you have to escort an NPC through an area give the NPC data more stupid than twilight. they will walk right into enemies, they cannot defend themselves, and make you restart the entire level just to move them again! in cave story, you can actually pick the dogs up, and carry them, meaning the only thing you have to worry about is your health. the dogs wont wande3r off and get killed, they wont make you reset the entire level (unless you are so stubborn that you never use save boxes.) and the best part, is that the only real challenge is finding them. considerably, only two of them are hard to catch, witch is the one in the abandoned house, and the one running around.

2: The glitch checkups: that's right. cave story is almost glitch free. the ONLY glitch i can think of is in the ballos battle, you can jump in his eye in the second, and final round of the battle. in the plantation, if you manage to glitch up the tube-O-Death to where the door is, guess what? its locked ANYWAY! the only other glitch i can think of is the bonus room before you fight misery and the doctor. if you go in the clouds, or in boosters lab and sleep, the room will regenerate.

3: all the clever tricks and jokes: now cave story might not have a lot of jokes in it, but a few examples of tricks and jokes are: the mimga mask ending, and that how in the DS version the credits images will have the mimga mask on them as well. if Mr. Little is still in your bag when you complete the game, he leaves a little message for you.

4: Creative Characters: yeah. all of the characters are pretty cool, and creative. he didn't leave them just so... boring. he actually made characters that pop in your head.
Balrog is definitely one of them. Huzzah! :balrog:
5: the super high frame rate: I'm using a windows vista and I can run at PERFECT frames. enough said, the game is fast no matter what. (play the D.S version. its the best graphics I've seen for cave story)

6: Beautiful storyline: the story works out perfectly. even though the best ending is really hard to get, its definitely worth it if you like a good story every once in a while. the game is called cave STORY am I right?

7: decent music: Daisuke Amaya doesn't fool around. he made his own program to make music for his game. plus, the music really fits the mood for the scene and moment you are in. ( don't be hating, but I really hate meltdown. its probably the music I like the least. )

8: Simple, but perfect graphics: I think the title says it all. i used to hate games that had graphics like this, but ever since i played cave story, my mind was changed. A LOT. Technically, i used to like realistic graphics, and games with more good looks, like the new Mario games, well basically any 3d game that looked somewhat real. but cave story was able to get me into those older games, or more pixelated games like minecraft, and Scott pilgrim vs. the world.

9: all the games mechanics: the game was made perfectly, with perfectly working weapons, a good EXP system, smooth movement, puppies, Fair enemy damage and health ratios, and just pure epicness!

10: Its great for passing the time: With all the glory of cave story, and the great community of hacks, mods, and separate games, cave story never gets old.

If you agree with any of these, feel free to speak up. got any other ideas of great things about cave story? you know what to do. if you though any of my comments were rude or bad, please don't rant about it. thank you for reading.

Ok so I have issues with 2 of your points:

1. This isn't an escort mission, for the reasons you've described. Finding the puppies is essentially a "fetch quest", and in fact I'd say it's one of the most boring parts of the game since it makes you trek back and forth across the sandzone meaninglessly.

2. In the PC version of Cave Story, there is a glitch in grasstown where you can skip talking to chaco and the game becomes unwinnable if you turn on the power I think. Also the wiiware and CS+ versions and 3D versions are riddled with various bugs that have yet to be addressed.

I haven't heard of that one before... I knew that Chaco could be skipped but not that it could lead to an unwinnable state...

Though now that I recall Her scripts and the flags that control her dialogue... Wow, I guess you could make the Jelly's unable to be spawned with the right flags...

Back to the OP: Cave story isn't perfect, nothing is... But I do say that the original version is one of the best there is, especially for a one-man zero-budget late-night hobby.

I always found that Grasstown and SandZone was my least favorite. (To much back and forth), though almost everything after is a smooth ride of interesting and fun. My friend says that he always hated the first run of egg Corridor, but the rest is bearable.

Though I do enjoy your points... I appreciate what you had to share...
(Maybe spell "resons" right at least...)

I don't believe and form of creative media can be perfect, there will always be flaws, certain things can come close, but nothing is perfect, there are a fair few problems with Cave Story and many things could be improved on, does that stop it from being a great game, no, but it does stop it from being a perfect game. I don't really want to make this post more negative than it is so I won't bother just listing things off.

Technically it is because of modding, but a LOT of the things in this game are FAR from being perfect.
Example, the core.

Would you mind explaining a little? What's wrong with The Core? (I'm just interested in other people's opinions).

I think that metalsonic was talking about the actual core (as in the boss fight).

If he was mentioning the spammy forum member... Than I have no idea why he would bring him up in this thread, which has nothing to do with him...

For future reference:

When you say "the core" or "the Core" that means the boss.

When you say "The Core" or "The core" or "THE Core" that means the user. (Notice the caps placement)

you said "The Core" So I though you might not have known the difference

If he was talking about the boss, then I would like to know what's so bad about it as well.

psh, as if anyone uses proper capitalization these days
learning how to read context will get you a lot farther, unfortunately it seems to be a much more difficult skill to master for some reason :droll:
also I'm pretty sure nobody cares about <user>, why would they bring them up in a completely unrelated thread

Well, mainly because he's going to learn sooner or later.

Might as well let it be now instead of a situation where he would end up embarrassing himself. >_>

You're dumb, this is a fetch quest, not an escort quest. It's boring and easily the worst section of the game.

None of the things you listed are glitches. Cave Story is a glitch-free game, congratulations on fucking up the strongest point you had.

It has so many clever tricks and jokes that it doesn't have very many? There are a few easter eggs and comedic situations, but I don't see how that constitutes perfection.

He's a bumbling minion that happens to be a toaster. Just because a character is well-made doesn't make it creative, and Balrog is not one of the greatest characters in video game history. "All of the characters are pretty cool" is such a subjective statement that you should go fuck yourself.

Yeah, wow, a game with 320x200 resolution and 4 sprite layers runs smoothly on anything made this decade. GOTYAY.

No. You're not. The story is charming at best, not fuckin' Bioshock.

You make a good point but get demerits for using an emoticon.

tl;dr the graphics are perfect because you like them.

Saying "perfectly" won't convince me that Cave Story is perfect. In fact, saying "epicness" just makes your argument look worse. Pixel managed to balance the handful of systems Cave Story has, wow, no wonder he's a hero to indie devs everywhere.

I probably couldn't have said it better myself, but I like my own stupid way of saying this is a dumb thing.
