Thanks too CommanderJersey, I was inspired to make a NES cave story mod.

HOWEVER I have no plans for this mod, I guess you could say Retro Story is dead.

Hidden text highlight (or click) to view:

but that would be harsh.

This will work with Cave Story+ using ogph folders and the freeware versions, with an added 8-bit soundtrack.
Please give Jersey props to keep doing his mod!
Hopefuly this will give him a confidence boost.

Wow. People still know about this? Cool.
Thinking about it, I actually don't have anything to do tomorrow. I might be able to get some work done on it.
The problem with this is that tile sets can take a long time to edit, but I might be able to copy and paste a few textures and recolor them. I could try to get a new demo out tomorrow if I try enough. Wish me luck.

Just though I'd want to show you all what I'm currently doing.

I'm basically porting my retro mod over to the freeware version, but things got a lot more interesting for me in the process.
Anyway I'm total support for Jersey to take his time no matter how long it takes. :)

No joke, those rocks kinda hurt my eyes, especially when I saw them for the first time. I recommend changing the color of those rocks to something darker and easier on the eyes.

Pretty much what Hayden said. It doesn't look like you make it look "retro," it looks like you made it blurrier with uglier colors.

What I did may not seem professional, but the "retro" feel is what I'm going for, sorry nobody is getting any fun out of this, I just wanted to help Jersey continue his mod.
no worries though because I have another plan that might keeps things afloat.

Quick surprise,

Agreed. OM2 would work better for Retro Story.

And why would anyone want to REDUCE the graphics quality from cave story? I'd rather UPGRADE them like with WTF Story or King's story. No one REDUCES graphics qualities anymore. those snapshots make me feel like vomiting...
... i just did a little... :pignon2:

You should have used MS Paint for Windows XP instead for lowering the res
Win7 version f*cks everything up

If your gonna use a program to reduce the res than why are you even doing this? What skill are you going to gain? Why? If you care about your quality then you'd do research and you'd know that a sprite being 8 bit means that each sprite can only use 3 colors and the entire screen can only display 8 at a time. The resolution of the image doesn't effect any of that. The color palette is something you'd have to find online. So once again I ask, why?

I just wanted to try something cool, I know people would find out that I used paint's reduce color trick, *not that anyone cares, just sayin'*
I figured the nes games had to use the colors wisely.
Maybe I can find better ways to use the colors, however what came up was just fine for me.
:toroko: *WHACK!*

You may find it relevant that the person who started this thread is the same person who wrote this blog post.

The XP version isn't automatically installed on a Windows 7 computer, but that doesn't mean you can't download and use it. Although the post below the one I linked to may be of more help, even if I myself haven't followed through yet.

Are all in agreement that the contents of said post are completely inaccurate?

Anyways, I don't see much to gain for the way this project is going as it is now. That's why I recommend a change in how its gone about.
