Okay why is Quote named Quote and not something else. What is he quoting? Why not a normal name like Bill, or George?

Quote, Curly Brace, and (semi)Colon are all things commonly used in C++, the language the game's in.
Quote is actually an anagram for his real name, Qoute - the literary intricacies of this name were lost in translation.

Pretty much the logic behind the names of the named robots in Cave Story. As for why the name Quote for our protagonist, I'd say that it ironically symbolizes the fact that Quote's lines aren't specifically shown in-game.

Uh so judging by the fact that you said named robots and not just Quote and Curly I assume that includes Malco
And if it does what does that mean I don't get it and google isn't being helpful

Ah yes, Malco. That's a very cryptic one. For most keyboards, the quote (") and curly brace ({}) characters are visually available on the keyboard, but some very obscure ones are not. In some word processors (not sure which ones this works in, but I know it works in KWord), you can get the omega (Ω) character by by pressing SHIFT+M+A+L+C+O.

The "C" in "college" is for "crippling debt".

Because that's what Pixel chose, probably on a whim. That's like asking why he named Balrog after a mythological creature made of pure flame. Because he liked the name.'

Nevermind I'm stupid.

Well, quote was originally Curly Brace, and I think there's also something about the { key being appearing to be on the " key's back.

But Quote doesn't say anything.

That's one of the reasons he chose it perhaps. Irony.

It means "king of the bars" if I recall. The name has absolutely nothing to do with Tolkien's Balrog, which has a different and more complex name origin:

I recall reading in an interview something about how Balrog was indeed named after the aforementioned Balrog. I am fairly sure it does not mean "king of the bars".
