If by "he" they mean Pixel, I really am sad. Seemed like something he would have said yes to. How disappointing.

 

I bet it was more likely Nicalis that said no.
I heard that some Indie brawl developer also asked to use quote, and they were declined.

 

Well I mean, let's be honest. The game looks incredibly fun and incredibly well-made in that retro style and I'd love to play it someday; the game itself, at its core, is nothing that anyone would just wanna not be associated with so quickly, right? But I mean, seriously, the presentation. The name of the game, how the main character looks, all the promotional art I've seen that's just gross shit and dead meat boys, the princess you're rescuing being named "bandage girl"... it's all that kinda imho-really-fucking-weird style that a lot of modern Western indie games use to some degree, I mean it's like Castle Crashers or Alien Hominid with its really gross/weird stuff here and there, it doesn't make the game un-awesome but imo is kind of really unappealing and weird, like the developers think everyone that's a teen/young adult male that'll be into that style of game will immediately love that kind of "gross" humor. When you think about it, as WEIRD as Japan can be--and usually is, a lot of it's a very charming weird, not this "gross-out" weird, and you think about Cave Story and everything Pixel makes and how, like, clean and crisp and "not gross" (with the exception of ballos? .3.) it is, I could completely understand Pixel himself not wanting to be associated with this project at all, lol.

Last time I checked, nicalus doesn't have the intellectual property rights to cave story and it's charecters (do they? O.O).
Besides, I'm pretty sure they would have approached Pixel himself about it, as opposed to some random company.

Anyway, I'm sort of glad that he's not in it. Although Meatboy is an extremely fun game, Quote or any other cave story character just don't fit in it (as ragnaroq pointed out). Anyway, what would they call him, Mr. Traveler? His name is supposed to be a secret, last time I checked.
