There is no watermelon because the watermelon is a symbol of oppression. Since the early days of american slavery it was common for the black slaves to be given watermelon as a treat for good behaviour. This positive reinforcement encourages the slaves to work harder and makes them less likely to attempt escape; thus, the watermelon is a vessel for the perpetuation of the subjucation of the lower class. Watermelon is just as evil as the use of the word "Nigger" as a means of demoralization by negative association, or the grape drink (wine) which was forbidden to the slaves, furthering and solidifying the conception of a people who were inferior in privilege and rights. In recent years, there has been a turnaround with the abolishment of slavery where the black people now have free access to purple drank and watermelons.
Curiously enough, these objects still continue to serve their original intent by means of a sort of role-reversal, becoming stereotypes of black culture and continuing to provide a divide between black and white society. Thus, we have chosen to remove the watermelon altogether in a hope of a more unified, culturally tolerant society.
What about fried chicken?
