I promise flower's won't just float there, the background will have vines or somesuch that the flowers will seem like they are coming out of.
The old big mushroom is still around too, just happens to not be in these pics.

I will probably do other levels in slightly different perspectives.

Yes. You can think of it as a decapitated head, or a blob in a helmet if you want.
Its walk animation looks alot better then you'd imagine from the screen shot.

Since everyeone is doing it.


If anyone really likes the fog and moon backgrounds, and wants to edit them in a mod game, this is how they work.

The map is basicaly broken down into layers.
The top layer dosn't move. It's from pixel 0 - 87.
2nd layer moves really slow. It's from pixel 88 - 122
3rd layer moves medium speed. It's pixel 123 - 145
4th layer moves pretty fast. It's pixel 146 - 175
5th layer moves really fast. It's pixel 176 - 239.

Im not sure what happens if you stretch the image either way. I assume stretching it horizontaly is harmless. But i wouldn't be suprised if stretching it down messes something up. I'll probably test when i have the time to attempt making my own image on this, maybe some hills and mountains.

Some other people posted pics of there text box, i wanted to hop on that band wagon. So i did. Mine looks really ugly tho.

New polar star.
And which muchroom do you guys like better?

Right is my old one, made in paint.
Left is new made in artrage 2 free version its rough around the edges, and the way to transfer it to pbms's is a little ghetto... It could be a nice way to make a level, or maybe even my whole game.

I like the one on the left; It has a nice plastered effect on it. It still looks flat, however... Maybe if you removed the stuff (not sure what to call it) under the mushroom's head?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be messing around with it more. I really think i'll like making background in that program. But, it dosn't seem suited to do small things. I forgot to mention that i didn't get as much contrast as i want (yet) out of that new mushroom.

I suppose i can arange that with out much difficulty.
But TRUST ME, its one of those things that just completely takes you out of the inviornment.

Im planning on having a playable demo once i do some more stuff with scripting and npc'ing. I can't say when, but, yeaa its slowly coming. Damn work and gf's eating up all my cave story time (jk tho).

You're probably already on it, but I think you could add a lot of depth to the mushroom if you make the shadow darker and the highlight brighter (which, i take it, you are doing) and if you move the angle of incoming light a bit so that the highlight is somewhere near the middle of the 'shroom and not all the way out on the edge.
Like this, sort of:
diph.php


It's a handy technique if you can't have too sharp lightning.
