my school put up a giant square thing in the middle of this field.
i don't fucking get it.

every time i talk to people about it, the price that it apparently cost the school increases.
"yeah i heard that it cost like 20'000 dollars"

Also anyone who's saying it's pointless is an idiot. All art is pointless. The only difference here is that this one doesn't appeal to your aesthetic sense.
Alsoalso it's not modern art (which ended in the seventies). Rather it's postmodern art, specifically minimalism.

In a geodesic dome every vertex lies on the surface of a sphere, ergo, any sphere constructed of triangles with greater than infinitesimal size is the same thing as a geodesic dome.
So yes it's a geodesic dome, but I wasn't erring in what I said either.

By pointless I meant that it doesn't effect the universe in any substantial way. That is clearly a misusage of the word, so I would like revise my previous statement to say that ALL art has a point (for example, this square exists to frame buildings and generate discussions on the internet). However, whoever called it pointless still only did so because of aesthetic reasons, and is still therefore wrong.

I think he meant that if someone is going to call out a work of art as being pointless would be a rather fruitless endeavor, as all art lies on the same ground as this particular minimalist sculpture. On top of that, all art has the same point once you get down to it: to express yourself.

Some art is good and some art is stupid (like this silly metal picture frame), but they're both equally "pointless," which is to say, not very pointless at all.

 

well, yeah.
good art could explore the boundaries of art, (although that's getting harder and harder to do). or, it could be funny, or be aesthetically pleasing, or be propaganda, or something meant to send a message or provoke a feeling etc etc.
art is like 90% thought and 10% skill/ execution.
it's defiantly not pointless man i fucking hate when people call art pointless it really grinds my gears.

the art that was put up at my school defiantly has a message behind it. "hey, look how fucking beautiful this campus is, all you need to do is view it through a frame and all of a sudden you get all sorts of new appreciation for it". which is nice i guess, but actually constructing that frame, and the idea behind it aren't worth nearly the 60'000 dollars my school paid for it.

No, I meant both actors in this scenario drew to express what they wanted to express, just as some people poorly draw furry art on dA. There is a vast spectrum of how good art is, but it's always there for a purpose. All art is equally meaningful, some of it is just shit.
