So I was looking over some spritesheets used in Cave Story and I noticed some sprites used for Malco walking. And I have no recall of Malco walking at all in the game, he seems to be just standing in that same spot the whole time. Were they unused or did he actually walk and my memory's as sharp as a pillow not that good?

Well no wonder why he can't get us any tea!

Several of the spritesheets include unused bits that aren't available at any point in the game, not even through modding w/o ASM.

The Sheet for the Sandzone enemies include winged-puppies if I remember correctly...

And parrots facing straight, and Cent includes a white cyclops, and Eggs1 includes an owl.

EnlightenedOne is right, that walking sprite of Malco is unused in the game. And if I were to guess, I'd say there's no argument you can give for an <ANP command to make him walk, but I can't confirm this.

And if I can remember, there's also a Mimiga soldier that hasn't been seen in the game either.

Along with a white sphere-like thing in Eggs1.

Pixel certainly had plans for them all, but abandoned the ideas, because they were... Bad?

Or he didn't have the proper coding for the enemies?

Those sprites were probably used at one point in development. There are a number of reasons why he would have left them out. In the end, I'm sure he just didn't see the need for them to be used or they no longer fit after making changes along the way. I don't think having the proper coding was the reason, but it is possible that he got fed up with programming them and just scrapped them out of rage. By the end of development, I understand that he was very ready to be done with the game, so that wouldn't surprise me.

Anyway, I expect Malco just didn't need to walk around anymore, once the whole story and cut scenes were finalized, but there might have been a time where there was a cut scene or something that had him walk. I've read that there are other commercial games that have beta resources still left in the game data (but are not used in game), and I expect this stuff isn't much different.

And Pixel might not have even thought those various enemies and things were bad ideas at all. Sometimes good ideas are abandoned due to time and getting stressed by trying for too much. Perhaps they were working mostly at one point but were a bit buggy, and he just didn't want to deal with it anymore, so he took them totally out, etc. I can think of a lot of reasons.
