Literal Translation

I was bored about 5 minutes ago, so I was just typing random stuff in Google Translate. Anyway, it occurs to me to set it to Japanese and write "Doukutsu Monogatari" (which you almost certainly know is Cave Story), so it just changed it to symbols and kanji. The translation is LITERALLY Cave Story.

Just because game titles are often changed in translation. Although not as much with indie games.

I felt like typing in "Neko 100" into google translate and apparently it literally means "100 Cats." Whoa! The thing that's named "Neko 100" literally has 100 cats too!

 

Did you really have to make a thread for this? I mean, it's just a small thing that isn't surprising at all.

But would it be all that surprising? I mean, when you translate a game's title, shouldn't it mean what it originally meant in its original langauge? What's so surprising about that?

 

Oh good point. I guess it wouldn't actually be a surprise although it would be interesting to know.

 

I wasn't that surprised, but think: "All your base are belong to us," a internet meme, and a bad translation, though not a game title, but it should be "With the cooperation of Federation Forces, all of your bases now belong to us" according to Wikipedia.
But also: ポケモン is the literal translation of Pokemon.

 

"All your base are belong to us" is just bad grammar. It could've been literal AND better, like "All your bases belong to us".

I understand the surprise here, i know nothing on japanese and, more often than not, a game title is not as simple as a literal phrase such as cave story

 

What do you think the game name would be, then? Robot War in a Cave? Polar Star Quest? I am qoute adn i shot boolets?

That's too spoilery-ish (Yes, that is a new word just added to the english dictionary).

Its fun playing it the first time because you have no idea that the "surface" that everyone is talking about is actually below you.




I think (or maybe I heard somewhere) that "Doukutsu Monogatari" was a placeholder name because Pixel... makes stories taken place in caves. But he later just kept that literal name when he didn't think of another name.
