I'd say it's more like the Nemesis. They're both quite strong and semi secret but have a trick to them that could make them difficult to use - namely, they both need to be below their third form to deal the most damage.

New conspiracy: every game that has the protagonist use a weapon to kill an in-game enemy is copying the idea off of Cave Story.

You see, battlefield is actually the spiritual sequel to Cave Story. There is a machine gun in both.
In fact, Pixel developed Battlefield. He developed ALL games with weapons. Even ones before cave story. The truth is out: this "Pixel" is actually Miyamoto, Valve, Dice, and Activision! He is the greatest false identity known to mankind...
