He means, attacking everything that seems to be of a threat to it. Thus, preserving itself.
Though, I'm not sure if that really entitles it to very much sentience....
Practically anything that's able to will attack when threatened, specially if backed into a corner.
And for those who believe the Core artificial, it could be 'programmed' to attack anything that enters the room...
{Don't want anyone toying with the only thing keeping everyone on the Island from dropping to their death....}
