My son (15) is reading the big blue C++ book now. I will be curious how much knowledge retained and if he will be developing games when finished.

Personally I've had a lot of success using Processing, which is a program that is it's own IDE as well as a library of useful functions. You have to know basic Java in order to use it. Essentially it's still object-oriented like C++ but it's a good way to get into projects such as games because it helps set up tricky things like graphics, sound and saving and loading data.
