How is the island stay floating after the core's death?

Some people can be so depressed that they bring down the entire room, but Ballos brings down the entire room in the most literal of ways.

Maybe that's how the Sacred Grounds became hell, given the name and the angel-like Butes and Mesas still fluttering about in the level. I refuse to call it "Blood Stained Sanctuary", as the stage is colored orange, not brown, let alone red.
