How do i start

hey guys im new here. i beat cave story a few times and i want to start modding it.

i do have modding exp because i used to mod halo(pc) but i dont know where to start for cave story. can someon just explain to me what topics to read so i can get started

Though, modding a FPS doesn't give much help here...

Really, you should be able to just browse the Hacking/Modding subforum to learn whatever you need.
So many people have asked so many questions over hacking and modding Cave Story that the forum's practically a guide in itself.
{Really, there's no real full Newb Guide or such, yet. But there are several helping threads and files}

But, just to get you started, the basic things require to mod Cave Story are as follows:
- Original files {EXE, Data folder, etc.}
- Cave Editor OR Sue's Workshop {Not both, they don't play nicely together}

See? Simple.
For more advance stuff, you'd need tools like Resource Hacker for getting into files the editors don't handle {Say, the ORGs, which are the music files}, or Ollydbg, which is a deassembler, allowing you to do fancy stuff with Assembly.

But really, just browse through the Hacking/Modding subforum first. That should answer at least 99% of your questions ;

 

Thank you very much. the stuff i want to like make a map wich is very hard. and as i get better. i want to make weapons i know how to make them do damage but i want to actually make them diffrent

Well all love you more than likely (cus u luv cave story)

And just do little projects dont have to release them, just get used to modding

If your going to edit sprites contact me cus its not hard, but its hard if you cant find the right info.

It took me a month to find out how to do it

In Cave Editor, you click Edit Entities on the top part of the Map Editor window. Then you right click, and choose "Add New Entity". There is a drop down window at the top that will let you choose what NPC the enitity is.

Youtube tutorial

The basics of modding is not so hard to learn by using the search button.

If I learn a bit more I`ll make probably a video tutorial on Youtube about the very basics, since it is a big demand for it. Just for charity to all new guys who wanna learn.

But it would be better if a more experienced modder would do it and not me.

 

Thats a really good idea. Because i mainly learned how to mod halo from youtube vids n stuff. like it would show them doing simple stuff step by step and it would get people like me used to it.

so someone should do that or make a topic thats like:
