Compared to the SHMUPs I've been playing lately, Guxt at first seemed far too simple, with an outdated scoring mechanic and old-school design. However, as I got farther into the game, and It started to get quite intense, I really fell in love with it. The scoring is actually BRILLIANT, rewarding you for using your special weapons cleverly (for instance in level 2 you can kill enemies with the angle shot before they reach the top and detach from the meteors for extra points.)
I think the game's biggest problem is that it starts out so slow. I mean, the first level is absolutely dull, with a bunch of small fries and no real challenges. So far, my favorite is level 3 (the enemy spaceship/fortress level is always the best.) The music in level 3 is really catchy and gets you in just the right mood for some enemy busting, plus the bullet showers finally start to become a little more intense.
The only other real problem I see with the game is that dying makes it really hard to get back up to speed (a problem with all shmups that rely heavily on powerups), often ending in multiple deaths after the first, eventually causing a game over.
Goddarn this game needs faster rapid fire (Either that or those ships just home in on me!!!)
Yeah, at first you are going to be pounding on the fire button. But as soon as you get your first powerup, you can hold it for rapid fire (though there are some times when it will benefit you to tap, like when using twin (which allows you to shoot as long as there are less than two sets of bullets on screen.)) Wow, double paranthesis..
PS- Anyone noticde the Ika-chan cameo in Level 1 if you grap both powerups?
