Yes, Ares is the way I wish you could fight in Escape Velocity. It's also gonna get a port to OS X.

If anyone has ever wondered about those first two EV games, the plug-ins for the EVN ports of Escape Velocity and Escape Velocity: Override are here and here, respectively.
