Jesus Christ man, I'm really fucking pissed if you think that suicide is caused by "society convincing people their life isn't worth living"
You obviously haven't the slightest idea of what depression really is if you think that's what it's about
Come back to this thread when you actually care about people instead of just trying to prove how horrible society is
You have to look at the big picture. In some cases (not all, but some, so I am not saying he was completely in the right), it is societal standards that generate negativity about certain people. If you don't match society's standards, you often get burned. Look at people in the LGBT community, people suffering from obesity and mental issues, etc. They don't fit society's standards, and certain members of society take offense to that and bully them or shun them for it. This can lead to depression or suicide. Fortunately, society is getting much better with that, and the times are changing. So honestly, I don't think that the argument is valid any longer. It focuses too much on the people who still uphold the Old World societal standards, and their numbers are shrinking every day.
Not only that, but not everyone gets depressed because they don't fit in with society, so the point was only half valid anyway. You could make a whole debate about how individuals are adversely affected by society but it's hardly worth developing the argument for argument's sake. Because of the limited amount of knowledge and analysis humans can do/make, it's impossible to know if either of you are correct.
It's probably more worth dropping the argument, and instead of fighting over the problem's source, try our best to help people who have the problem. One day we'll discover its source, but it won't be any of us. We're not doctors or psychologists, so we need to stop acting like we are.
EDIT:
Another thing. I have considered suicide. But don't anyone EVER even remotely think about it. Think long and hard about what you believe, or think you believe. Are you willing to take the risk of ceasing to exist just because you want the suffering to end? Think long and hard about the word nothing.
