Im not an expert at the snes, at all, but I have somewhat of a grasp of how much the snes's hardware can take.
I have done some coding with snes (no not just lunar magic) nothing beyond roms but still, Im pretty sure that the snes can handle cave story (with great modification of course). Im sure your gonna say "Why dont you code it?!" and I'll say "I dont feel like it" then you'll say "Its cause you cant!". Lets just skip that and say that I was just saying its possible.

It's definitely possible, but you'd have to change a bunch of stuff so the SNES could handle it. Hell, you could even port it to atari. Not saying you'd have much more than a square for a player player and a blocky version of first cave with no text, doors, or enemies whatsover, though.

I'm not mocking anyone except maybe Jenka from Cave Story.
