I have made a discovery.
Although the analog stick isn't good for normal movement you can use it to efficiently shoot upwards or downwards while at the same time moving left or right. This allows you full control of all four directions when flying with the machine gun.
If anyone here has the PSP port for Cave Story then I would thoroughly recommend trying this.
Lvl.3 Machine Gun + Analog Stick = Pure Awesomeness
