well, i could have figured that out. I wanted to edit the tilesets. :(
yup, the mod is dead
anyway, i have anew mod i'm planning...
goth story
change weapons to spells, a few minor tileset edits, new maps... it'll be great.
but this time, I won't make a thread until I have a demo.
sorry to disappoint anyone...
i may post the incomplete version of Escape the Island later.
:(:(:(:(:(:(sorrys:(:(:(:(:(:(

Alright, but this time, try to keep copies/backups of your mod in a different folder.

That's probably the safest way to avoid losing work if something goes wrong.

Trust me, carrotlord, if I had known CE was going to GLBOIYUGUYF up my mod I would have.
I discovered a way to make it work, but I would prefer if there was a stand alone tileset editor.
Know of one? GirakaCHEEZER, do you use one?
Also, Goth Story isn't working either. I think I somehow GLBOIYUGUYFed up the u(Kings) map.
I should just import the Pens and Mimi tilesets into anothe Cave Story folder, cuz thats all I modified.
Would that GLBOIYUGUYF anything up?

GIR uses CE, so there's no reason for him to use a stand alone tile editor.
And no, it wouldn't fuck anything up as far as I know, but hey.

replace the doukutsu.exe with a fresh one and change the backgrounds back to what they were.

A small mistake shouldn't cost the whole mod. Unless you lost alot of assembly, I don't see why you can't do this.

My copy of CE says "error saving map data" or somesuch and the maps don't change. It says it too for the tilesets, but the edits I make to the tilesets stay. And yes I did lose a lot of work.
Also, Doukutsu.exe has become corrupted and doesn't work.

Famous Read-Only error, doesn't anyone lurk anymore? {Or even use the Search Button, for that matter..}
Just make sure all the files in the Data folder are unchecked for Read-Only, or it won't let CE save.

Alternatively, go to the options menu in CE and check "Remove Read Only Status from Files". That should fix the problem.

My suggestion is to search for Noxid`s basic modding guide. There you`ll find everything you need explained to get started right. Do those things he suggests and you`ll be fine. How much progress did you loose?

Noxid doesn't have a basic modding guide....?
The only one I know of is by boots, which you can find here.

Noxid has a basic guide for getting started: http://www.cavestory.org/forums/posts/20098/. It is not complete, but it`ll help in the above mentioned problems ((C) Pixel, .pbm to .bmp, how to use CE, some really basic explanation on writing script, planning...). I think the error message sixtyseconds has is due to the (C) Pixel thing or a similar basic error, which is avoidable using this guide.

Note that last part. That copy of Doukutsu.exe DOESN'T WORK! It crashes CE because I tried to open it in SW.
Also.... any standalone .PBM editors? I'd like to edit Caret.pbm for another mod, but CE doesn't do that.

If you edit the pbms with MS paint, you will need a hex editor if you don't have CE.

If you want to avoid a hex editor:
This is what I suggest:

Have a copy of CE
Have a copy of SW
Have a copy of Cavestory with your sprite edits, and NOTHING else changed.
And of course, your mod in a different folder.

Go to CE, change pbm -> bmp and remove (C)Pixel requirement on the sprite edit version, then edit the bmps using microsoft paint, but only on the sprite edit version of Cavestory.
Go to CE again, change bmp -> pbm, and put back the requirement. Copy the pbms from your sprite-edited cavestory to the data folder of your mod.

You have just edited sprites using CE, and your mod will still work in SW.
Otherwise, you need to manually use a hex editor to add "(C)Pixel" in ascii hex codes to the end of your pbm every time you edit it with MS paint.

More info:
"Error saving map data" and a messed up version of the exe usually means that you tried editing with CE before you removed the read-only requirement of all files in the CS folder.

SW does not care if your Cavestory files are read-only. CE will screw up your game if the files are set to read-only.
Remove all "read-only" attributes of all files in your Cavestory folder before trying to use CE.
If you didn't make any backups, then I'm sorry. Your edited game may not be recoverable.

And that little bit can mess up the image a little, it had 5 pixels in the top right corner of the text box.

Paint edits PBMs? Kewl! It's my main image editor!
EDIT: OH, now I get it. I forgot to read the post that went along w/ it.
:p
That sounds hard....

It's not too hard. I use XVI32, Lowell uses translhextion (Did I spell it right?), CE editors tend to turn the requirement off, as well as some SW users. Manually doing it isn't so much hard, as tedious, but I like it.
