Yes hello. Been casually enjoying cave story for 5 or so years, finally decided to get serious on the shop version. managed to get done with hell in 5:44.8 but nothing different on title screen? Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it actually 5 minutes? I just always see people say under 6 for stuff to start changing but nothing haopened. I searched the forums a bit for this but didn't see anything about it. Thanks everyone.

oh, and any current info on speedrun tips would be nice ;D

In the freeware version the character on the title screen changes depending on the time, and the music changes as well. Six minutes is the cutoff, if you get under that you should get a new character on the screen. I'm not sure if the 3DS version(s) are different though.

As for tips, try using different weapons to suit your playstyle. The spur isn't necessarily the best choice. For example, the snake is really good for clearing deleets (the exploding wall enemies) before you actually have to pass them.
Don't worry too much about avoiding blocks in the second room. Try to avoid them if you can, but don't stop in one spot or go backwards too often.
Taking minor damage intentionally can help get through certain areas, such as the small spike-filled area surrounded by mesas on the lower part of the third area. It's a bit faster than the alternate route of going to the top of that section and waiting for the deleet to detonate.
The butes in the heavy press fight can be good for gaining health, but you may lose more than you gain if you get hit and it wastes a ton of time.
When the heavy press is defeated, you can hurt yourself on one of the butes and then stand underneath the heavy press. It's faster than waiting for the heavy press to fall then jumping in after it.
Other than that, make sure to save and level up your missiles and keep your life pot as long as you can.
Unless you really need to, don't go into the statue room. You'll waste quite a bit of time that way.
Once you get to Ballos, what I like to do is stand underneath his head and mash the attack button using the nemesis to annihilate his first form. You may need to use the life pot if you don't have any health here.
Second form is pretty easy as long as you have missiles, just try to save some for the last form.
Third form...just try not to get hit. It packs a punch.
An amazing way to save time on the last form is to damage yourself on the spikes, then booster up onto the boss where his left eye is. Stand in the eye. As soon as the boss starts to attack you, hammer it with whatever missiles you have and the rest of your weaponry if you run out.

I'll put some of that to use, definitely wasn't doing some of that. tried the snake, really didn't like having two gun's experience to worry about. now that ballos is a breeze I'll try mashing thru his first form and spamming his second with missiles. thank you.

as for the title screen, idk, I thought maybe I did something wrong. I just exit game at the final screen, right? and it should show me the new title screen? come to think of it, I don't believe the title screen shows your time on there either. it did in the freeware right? maybe you unlock the alt. bgms through the challenges? idk..

I think the titlescreen music just doesn't change in the 3DS eshop version.

In the 3DS version, the title screen doesn't have alternate music for your hell time. Same goes for every other official port of Cave Story (The ones by Nicalis)

That's not true, the DSi version gives you a different song with its respective character. I don't know about the others, though.

Does the 3DS eShop version not unlock jukebox songs with better hell times?
Yeah, it does.

So I just got a WiiU and saw this on the eShop.

I was wondering, if I've already played CS and seen the best and worse endings will it be worth it to buy this one?

I mean, what's the replay value?

From personal experience and opinion, it gives you the ability to pay the game with a different system which may give you a different feel for the game (ie handheld vs. computer), although some versions have added content. It's all up to you.

the added challenges definitely make giving one of the many ports a try. if you've only ever played the original, most (if not all) of the ports have cleaner interfaces and smoother gameplay. I'd recommend giving them all a try but maybe I'm just obsessed
ok so bossrush unlocks the secret bgms in the jukebox. I'm guessing sanctuary time attack gives alternate menus but frick doing that w/o missiles/lifepot. I can't get past heavy press lol... maybe if I sat around and took my time health farming and avoiding damage but that's the opposite of what will get a sub-six minute time

The only non PC one that I've played was the DSi edition. It offers different gameplay modes (easy, medium, hard) and has a jukebox. Also the controls are better, just because it's an actual gaming device.
