Well editing the sprite isnt the problem, theres a bounding box (correct me if im doing this wrong nox) that will register a hit on the enemy if they come in contact with it. So a wider shot wouldn't register unless we edited the bounds for the shot object thingy. This is beyond what I know, but...

Hey I can script TSC fairly well (at least I like to think so) I can do that, but for ASM I'm lost. So if your mod is going to be pretty heavily TSC instead of weapon and engine mods, I can help out a lot.
