If it shut down, I would probably go back to making crappy flash and html5 games, instead of modding Cave Story. (Because honestly, no one will play a CS mod if you post it anywhere else, while here you can at least get 5 people to try it.)

Try turning your computer off and on again? (That's stupid advice... But it sometimes works) Cave Story is a pretty basic game, so pretty much any computer that isn't millennia old should be able to run it. And you say that it's slower than normal... Does that mean you got it to run...
