Actually there are more than 256 commands - two bytes can be used to indicate an opcode (in fact one of the opcodes is reserved for processor extensions and requires 2 bytes to call.) Just knowing what the instructions do isn't enough - you have to know how the processor works. For instance...

    Mod: Julian's King

Have a look for npc.tbl using the forum search functions. You should turn up a few posts where the format is listed. The damage can be edited there. Good luck!

    So I started a hack.

Jenka? Naw, I just haven't changed the sprite and portrait yet. This hermit lives in the desert and is instrumental in getting one of the two hidden weapons. She can also give a +5 max health bonus if you find the pieces of a health capsule strewn about in the desert. The core! This is just a...

    So I started a hack.

Screenshots ahoy! I'm on my mother's PC and dragged along a few screenshots to upload. The layout of the grotto has been changed a bit. The jump to the door was kinda tight and probably not something someone who's still getting used to the jump boots would be comfortable pulling off. It's 1...

    Cave Story BEYOND

Out of curiousity, who's Abu? Seriously, that's a name I've never heard and it sounds like someone everyone here knows from the way you're talking about him (or her... nobody really knows on the internet ;) )

Sure, it'd be possible. You can just check which weapon is equipped and add 'x' health everytime the enemy is hit. It's a bit of a roundabout way of doing things, but it'd work. Otherwise you can add some code and data to store attributes in weapons and enemies, but that'd be a very complicated...

Ikachan - Another Pixel Game with nice Music!

It's available in the 40 meg bundle on this very site. A decent game, but too slow to be as enjoyable as CS. Still, it's great if you like Pixel's style of games.

Well this isn't about hacks so much as the game itself, or more specifically the game engine and what it can and can't do. But hacking some of the things mentionned so far is highly possible (in fact, I already have jump boots in my hack, and the two extra playable characters have a few extra...

I've seen some 2D shooters with mouse aiming pulling it off very well, but with CS the way it currently is, it wouldn't work. It works best when enemies keep their distances and try to get you by means of projectiles; if enemies are always up close and personal, it's just too damned easy. I...

Out of curiousity (and perhaps to inspire someone to work on a hack), what would you like to see changed in or added to Cave Story's game engine? Myself, I'd love to see acrobatics. Sliding under stuff, holding on ledges, dodging projectiles, or even wall-jumping. Quote is very "static" in...

    Music/Sound Hacking

Pxtone's format is the standard sound format Cave Story uses. It's what I use to create my sounds - converting the values to hex is necessary of course but that's essentially all there is to it. The last 1-4 pairs of brackets each contain one of the 4 channels the sound can use. As far as I can...

    Cave Story BEYOND

If you're a bit daring, you could grab a tracker of some kind, open up an .org with Pixel's program, and copy it note by note. That would get you every song in the game. But it'd also be painstaking and slow. ;) It's a tradeoff between either looking for them for a few hours, or copying them...

    Assembly primer

Yeah, every rose has its thorn. :) Though I wouldn't exactly call it wasted - my focus is the end-user who'll be using the software. As long as they're content, I feel I've done my part. ;) What I'm thinking of doing is introducing various assembly concepts (stack, processor flags, registers..)...

    So I started a hack.

I've completed the tileset and background for the cave. I'm very pleased with the results. Still might tweak the tileset a bit though. Mainly, I have lava, but it's opaque. Technically if you fall in, you're done for, but seeing as you'll have over 20 health by then it'd be possible to survive...

    Cave Story BEYOND

Well, .xm tracker files (assuming it plays those) can be pretty darn small. To boot, making chiptunes in them is easy. The only problem would be finding them. MIDI is a decent alternative though. ;)

    Assembly primer

Writing a disassembler is really nothing to write home about. You just need to know which opcodes map out to which mnemonics, parse the executable byte by byte, and dump the results to a text file. Anything else you might add is purely fluff (unless they're things to make the output more...

    Assembly primer

Well I don't want to write this just for it to be read and put aside afterwards. Once my internet access comes in, I'll be able to shift Endless Saga back as my #1 dev priority and Cave Story will take a bit of a backseat, so I'd rather prioritize than invest effort randomly here and there. ;)

    Assembly primer

In an attempt to have more in-depth and interesting hacking discussions and hacks, I'm considering starting a basic assembly primer. I'm wondering wether this would be interesting to anyone, or wether assembly involves too much effort to bother learning, practicing, and putting to use. If...

    Cave Story BEYOND

So the BYOND engine can only play midis? There's no way to rig it up to play a custom format (like say, ORG)? I'd doubt it since it doesn't have a programming language of its own, just a scripting language, but who knows. ;) It'd be cool having the original music.

    Using music

Anything is possible given the right knowhow and experience. You could even use MP3s if you rewrote the music engine to decode MP3s, but wether anyone has the balls to write an MP3 decoder in machine code and go through the trouble of importing the MP3s in the executable is something I'm highly...

    Eliminate the use for (C)Pixel!

Depends. A lot of modern languages will set an error that can be retreived via GetLastError(). Which Pixel uses (though I'm not sure which contexts call it and which don't at the moment. See below though - it's a moot point in this situation.) Modern APIs have deprecated mixing error codes with...

    Push Jump Key!

It's spawned via effect animations (ie, for instance, the star-shaped explosion when you fire your gun or the "Level up/down!" caption when your weapon level changes.) As far as I know, this is never called in the game. Out of curiousity I'll comb through the code tonight to see if it's ever...

    Music/Sound Hacking

I never really gave this much of a look, nor do I have any intentions of doing so in the near future. Music hacking isn't really much of a part of my plans at the moment and I have too little information on it to find anything relevant without rolling up my sleeves and getting serious with the...

    Cave Story Translations?

Allright. I'll give it a shot this weekend, when I'll have plenty of time to wrap my head around the file management in CS. ;)

    Cave Story Translations?

I like that idea. I'm not sure how easy to rig up it would be though - I'll look into it. It would mean loading the string file at startup and digging into it as necessary - a much bigger hack than meets the eye. Sounds fun. I'll look into it.
