    So I started a hack.

That's not the latest release, though I'm not sure which one was the latest one released here. A few bugs have been fixed, including the bookshelves, the Factory boss, and a missing item crucial to advancing. I'll post the latest version this weekend maybe, it goes all the way up to the desert...

Just managed to finish hell (finally!)

The super missiles do more damage, I believe. I'm not sure if they're better than the blade 2, though. I've never really liked the missiles because I tend to go a bit too trigger-happy when fighting Ballos. Powering up the missiles to level 3 is a good way to kill him off fast though.

Just managed to finish hell (finally!)

The eyes become vulnerable shortly after he "explodes." At this point it only takes a few hits to break one - coupled with Curly's weapon you can do quite a lot of damage with just about any weapon. :)

Just managed to finish hell (finally!)

It's much easier, but a bit slower. You can pretty much plow through him in one shot when he stops jumping if you fire fast enough into his socket with the blade 2 or, better yet, missiles. On the other hand, it's easy to fly up into the bats and you won't have enough time to kill him with most...

    Music/Sound Hacking

Well, not really, though I could buy some. The problem is that the dump is about 4 megs... :) I suppose I could split it up in multiple files though. I'm getting my internet back in a few days though, so it won't be a problem anymore then. I'll also be able to post my assembly primer...

I was thinking more along the lines of hooking up the entity to the player and making it constantly "fuel" the game engine's "velocity" variable with a value to keep the player moving. Vertical entities could be used to trigger explosions and changes in the bike's behavior if necessary. As for...

That's a shame, I'd love to know how something like that would turn out. :) I tried to get two scripts to run in parallel but it didn't work. I was hoping to spawn explosion-type entities all over the place in a room but no other script would run during that one's execution... That's why I'm a...

Just managed to finish hell (finally!)

@Daniel G: Little trick - try to keep your health above 15 before getting to his last form. You can do a bit of damage to his eyes before he summons the butes, then dive into the spikes and shoot upwards as fast as possible (they only do 2 damage per hit - you should have no trouble beating him...

    CaveShark

It's hardly a mod - like he said, it's to edit profile.dat saved games, not Cave Story itself. Although I suppose you could distribute a profile.dat file with, say, 10 health at the beginning and all health capsule flags set to on, making it a forced low-hp game. @ChimuKun: Out of curiousity...

    Music/Sound Hacking

A lack of internet at home (I should put that in my sig or something, at this rate...) make this impossible. Regardless, this is assembly, not hex, so you'd need to use a disassembler to get results. I'll post a link to a disassembly of Cave Story once I get my internet back. Assuming I don't...

@Osmose: I was thinking more along the lines of racing through a tight passage with jumps and exploding stuff, a-la 80s action movie. :) Generating the enemies like you mentionned would work absolutely fine if a script ran a series of WAI commands to handle the timing and never calls KEY or...

    Music/Sound Hacking

I'll post those two offsets (music) when I get my internet back, if anyone wants them. I think he meant the sounds though, not the music...

    Org Disassembler...

MIDI and ORG are two very different formats. Whereas MIDI is almost like a scripting language (closer to a tracker than to a script language, but the analogy stands :) ) ORG is a binary format where each byte represents the note, itsvolume, panning info, and such. More importantly, MIDI is a...

    Music/Sound Hacking

It works with any hex editor. What you have to do to force Direct Sound is to simply NOP out all PUSH instructions before the call to the creation of Direct Sound (since they won't be needed) and the changes to the ebp register after the call. The call you can just replace with xor eax,eax and...

@Osmose: Unfortunately, UNI doesn't work that way. It locks the screen in place so that it won't scroll in any direction if you move towards one of the edges. Which sucks, really, because it'd be great being able to float around on a map like that. :D Pixel should've made it so wandering around...

    Music/Sound Hacking

That's because it's an offset in program space, not in the file. What you really want is 0x0048F940. Only it'll be stored as 40 F9 48 00. You can NOT replace something by 0 and expect it to vanish. It doesn't work that way, and it's a mindset a lot of people have that should be dropped as soon...

    Reference different save file mod.

It's a shame Pixel never considered multiple save files. Or maybe he did and scrapped the idea for whatever reason, but it's still a shame. The debug save option allows you to name your save files, but there's no debug load option to do the same thing. :/

@Caveoholic: It's actually not that hard with a keyboard. Then again I used to play SNES ROMs with my keyboard when I was in college, so maybe I've gotten a little too used to using a keyboard for games... :D I'd guess it's more fun with a good, decent controller though. @Timmy: That might be...

    cheating

It's actually very different the second time around. You'll face different challenges and have to adopt different strategies (not having the machine gun to fly around made it a real pain at some points.) There's also a completely different final stage (edit: in addition to Hell that is), so...

Just managed to finish hell (finally!)

Congrats man, beating Hell is actually really easy after the first time. I remember dying on the way to Ballos (screw beating him, just getting to him was near impossible!) I got there by CAAAAREFULLY inching through the stage and killing enemies one by one. Now? I don't even stop at the bute...

    cheating

You should attempt to complete the game without cheating, then. It's far more rewarding (especially going through Hell - the sheer tension of coming within seconds of beating your best score is exhilerating :D ) Aside from that, a quick hack to avoid ever losing health is quite easy with a wee...

    cheating

I posted in the hacking section a thread on activating the debug modes - it might be worth a try. I'm curious what saving mid-boss fight would be like. ;) Aside from that, you could use Sue's Workshop to add health restoration points in boss rooms.

    So I started a hack.

I currently don't have internet access at home. It won't be available until about a week at most. With any luck it'll be available before the weekend. Most of my efforts have been invested in my assembly mini-compiler and the assembly primer this weekend (along with a visit to court, long...

    So I started a hack.

Well, like I said, you're not limited to 16 colors so you can just use a full-color bitmap. I suspect Pixel either wanted to keep the oldschool pixel-art style in the game, or reduced the colors to keep the filesize down. A 4bpp image in 320x240 is just 38.4k (roughly) whereas the same but in...

    Assembly primer

I've decided I'll release my assembler after all. Originally I wrote it as a quick and dirty utility but I scrapped the code and created a nice, simple Win32 interface for it and tightened up the code slightly. Basically you can enter code in an editable text zone. The format is a little...
