Actually, I'm going to have to disagree. If I recall correctly, found it easier to get to the Littles' house with Booster v0.8. (I think that was without the machinegun at level 3...) For pretty much everything else, however, the v2.0 is far better.

So, a hell run where you dequip the booster after the first room? I wonder if that's possible... there's that one place in the third room - the area with three deleets - which I'm not sure you could do without the booster.

This project is not about "messing around with its innards", though, it's about rewriting it from the ground up. That's not illegal, if done right. Linux is a legal clone of Unix (which is not free or open source as far as I know), for example. It does depend on exactly what you mean by "clone"...

A Cave Story clone is not Cave Story, therefore it is not subject to those rules. It may look and feel and sound like Cave Story, but it still is not Cave Story. Therefore, it's possible for it to be open source, if the developer so desires (which he apparently does not...).

A clone does not need to be closed-source just because the thing it's a clone of is closed-source.

The best weapon for that stretch of the Final Cave is the Snake. I did it with the Whimsical Star once, too. The Bubbler works fairly well if it's on level 3.

I thought it was time-based, not damage-based, but it could be both. I think she has teleported without taking any damage when I was fighting her.

A debugger would be very, very hard, a syntax check comparatively easy (but still probably hard). It would also be nice to have a) an editor for the profile.dat and b) a utility to convert an already created mod from Windows to Mac or vice versa.
