Well, I haven't been looking for about 4-5 years now; so I'm behind what might be the very best of today! But, back then the headphones I had decided I wanted to get :
(I'm amazed I remembered them lol)

Were sennheiser HD650's I believe (or was it HD600's?)
You should be able to find it for less than the retail listed on the site...
But, the trick I think I found out is you needed to couple them with the Cardas audiophile wires :

There might be better offerings though now... I mean like there's a super HD800 on their site for a retail of 1800$!!!
[There was one better headphone I used to know about but it was at least that much or more; I forget what kind it was...]
However, with truly great headphones or speakers you need something that will match that quality... like an amp or something ... I only have one link that I could find which might be outdated :
http://www.10audio.com/cary300sei.htm
The old best that I found for digital though uh... I really can't remember what was the best back then, except that the price tags were extreme!
Alternatively, there was some kind of earbuds that you get a doctor to make a mould of your ear and get a custom earpiece that was well rated. They were at least 300$ or more... Mind you this was a couple years ago!
I'm sure there are newer alternatives these days... I don't want to research the latest or I will be jealous! I need $$$$! lol
EDIT:
Kinda unrelated I remembered some of the components I thought were really good :
Calypso's pre-amp (for super speakers)
http://www.musicalsurroundings.com/aesthetixstrn-atlas.html
and I guess this stuff :
http://www.musicalsurroundings.com/aesthx2.html
http://www.10audio.com/aesthetix_calypso-sig_atlas.htm
They were to go with the best Martin Logan speakers :

(120,000$ per pair!?)
Ohh I might be wrong about the Calypso stuff (it isn't bad by any means ... I believe I was more interested in Theta Digital's stuff)
http://www.thetadigital.com/index.shtml
I was hoping to win the lotto so I could get a world-class audiophile room designed around and treated professionally for that equipment xD The price tag for everything was around 500,000$...
Ah well! I'm content with regular consumer level stuff ...
