What got you into Cave Story?

My cousin showed to me Cave Story in 2024, but i stopped playing, so in 2025 (NOW) he installed it for me again and now i'm playing and almost finishing it (in the true ending)

 

I know I've asked and said this way too many times on the discord before (I'm sorry), but what introduced you to this game?

In my case, I watched a Calamity mod nohit video and really liked the music which was a Running Hell remix. Eventually, I listened to the original which motivated me to play the freeware version, and the rest was history.

I honestly don't remember at all. It's been so many years.

 

I saw that Cave Story + was free on Epic some years ago and i liked the pixel art so I started playing. Best game I have ever played.

 

I discovered Cave Story from discovering Undertale, because Cave Story inspired it. It wasn't until summer of 2025 (current year as of posting this) that I actually played it, on RetroArch with the NXEngine core. I beat Balrog in the Shack, then got lost. A while after that, I got the Sega Genesis port downloaded to my PC and played that.

 

i never had consoles growing up, but i had a wii, since i didnt have the money at the time, i just played the demos
and turns out cave story has a pretty good demo!, then i joined the community a long while after that

 

When I was 4, my older brother and dad got it on a whim for the Wii. I didn’t play it until I was 9 and I got really good at it. I loved the story so much, and after I beat ballos, I had a mission. I was to beat it on every version possible. So far, it’s been Wii, 3ds, Ds, freeware, cs+. Working on it for the calculator now

 

For me, I was introduced when we downloaded the demo for the WiiWare version of it on our Wii. I did admittedly spoil most of the story for myself before getting access to the full game (not on the Wii, though, it was the 3DS exclusive port), but I still enjoyed it just as much when I was able to play through the whole thing.

 

i first downloaded the gog version on a win7 32bit computer (featuring intel core i3) and honestly, i have one save file that is on about grasslands, idk if i really gonna beat it as the best ending idfk

 

My computer is super limited, and the games I could play were really old. I managed to play Resident Evil 3 (Classic), Halo 1, Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6/Condition Zero, among others. Once I finished them, I was like, "I need more!" and replaying them wasn't an option since most ran at less than 30 FPS. I asked Gemini almost daily what games would work on my PC, and he kept recommending Cave Story. Until one day I got fed up and decided to try Cave Story... I don't regret it XD.
The music really captivated me (especially Grasstown's). The story truly touched my heart, even though I didn't know who the heck he was until more than halfway through the game XD. But after having to defeat Toroko, I realized I had underestimated this game... And then Ballos came along, and well, I spent days trying to beat him XD

Cave Story was one of the games I found, incredible, it stuck with me, I've had a cavestory phone background for the last 12 years among other things. I remember playing the unfinished Jenka's nightmare as well. The game is just incredible and I recommend it to everybody. I even tried to learn Balrog's theme on violin.

It's kind of crazy that you joined this place in 2014 but this is your first post, 12 years later. If you don't mind me asking, how did that come to happen?

 

Discovered the game in 2007 or 2008 as a child after coming back from abroad and not having access to my old friend group. Played a bunch of random games I downloaded from I believe newsgrounds at the time. Game stuck with me, I even remember playing the old unfinished Jenka's nightmare. I've also had the same Android app background since 2013 or 2014 which has Balrog and Curly flying.

Cult classic, can never forget a game like this.

Made the account, never posted anything, but I've been a lifelong fan of cave story. I decided to check in on Jenka's nightmare updates and remembered I had made an account on here, saw this post and wanted to respond to it. I had to reset my password but it's associated with my main email so it was easy.

As a side note I did play out both of the attempted finishes to Jenka's nightmare over the years, wanted to see if a third party tried their hand since or maybe the original creator. I'd love for Pixel to make a second game.
