• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Mod Recomendations

Hello, I am very new to this forum and o cave story, but I just finished it (I just beat hell in one of the oddest ways possible) and I am looking for mods. Does anyone have recommendations? Also, they need to work with cave story + and the challenges menu trick. I saw the thread with the mod listing, but I do not know which ones are good, and which ones work with cave story +. Thanks in advance!

See now, when you mention you want CS+ integration that's a bit tricky, since nobody has really made mods for CS+ yet. Theoretically, any CS mode without assembly hacks could be ported to CS+ with minimal effort, but if they use new graphics you'd also have to redraw those since everything in the original graphics is lower resolution.

Any of the mods on this forum are standalone, meaning you don't need CS+ or any other thing to play them - they all include the original cave story exe (or some perversion thereof).

Also the challenges menu thing isn't a trick, that's a feature >_>

As far as recommendations go, I guess I'd stick with The Show, Cave Story Redesign, Wrath of Revorshkenahl, and WTF-Story for starters

Wow way to not recommend King's Story, silly.
I recommend King's Story, more than I'd recommend those other ones, it's pretty much my favorite mod to date :p

Isn't it against the rules to recommend your own mod though? The unwritten rules of the forums....

Well, I do not mind the old graphics at all, and until the day that someone integrates mods into C+, then I will just do what everyone does. I will check out the ones y'all recommended. Thank you for the replies.

Pretty much yeah. Unless you want to look like some kind of prat. It's not like one can ever have a truly objective view of their own work anyway.

Anyway, enjoy the mods guy. Maybe if you are bored you can learn how to port some yourself! :0

I do not have much going on right now, so maybe I could :). I like having all my mods in one central location, or at the very least in one folder, instead of where each mod is its own game. Cave Story is tiny, space wise, so it is not a big deal, but it would be nice to see it implemented. If I can help, I would love to. I am not very experienced, though, so I doubt I could do much.

Edit: I actually do have one more question. I played through all of cave story + with a wasd setup and while I could learn a new setup, it would be nice if I could stick with that. Now, I know there is something that lets you modify the controls, but I do not know how it works or where it is. Help would again be appreciated.

Things like mapdata, the bullet table, starting hp, maps, events, etc. are hardcoded into the exe, so even if it was implemented you would still need to hand port every mod to this new system and rewrite the current editors to support it. It just isn't worth it.

Though if there is sufficient interest I may attempt to port a few mods to CS+.

How about the whole control thing I mentioned though? The biggest problem I have is the arrow keys do not work well on my keyboard, so I need to be able to change them. Preferably to wasd.

Haha, I know where that one is. I am talking about the mods. Since you mentioned the mods use the original game, and as far as I know the original game has no way in game to change controls, I was wondering if there was a way to change the controls on the mods.

Oh that
Well technically yes, there's Grebind on the tribute site, but other than that it is kind of complicated. Didn't someone have a thread for this a few days ago..?

Does grebind work? Is it a safe piece of software? I looked at it and I think it would solve my problem.

Well I can't remember hearing anything bad about it, and it's been in use for several years now, so I think it's safe to assume it's good.

I'd love to see A Lost Land and Jenka's Nightmare run under CS+ if at all possible...

...and of course Kaeso's Curly Brace's Story as wrapped up into Curly's Past by yours truly.

They designed CS+ specifically to make it easier to add mods to and to modify, I'm pretty sure they are okay with it
