Have you considered actually checking the dates in the "Last Message" column?

 

That is an option, but I feel that it would be more convenient to have the newer posts appear first.

 

They do, just below the pinned posts.

Alternatively, if you want to view all the newer posts that you haven't read yet, you can click on the "New Posts" button that you'll see at the forum index:

It's a thing for admins (and maybe moderators, dunno), and it is purely done for threads that are of importance, there isn't really room to pin funny things.
