Doukutsu Iterations is as much as an ARG as Petscop was, or B3313 is. Namely, it's barely an ARG, and is mostly just using Cave Story to tell a loose story while also flexing their programming skills. (Seriously, the Orange video is pretty mind-blowing.)

So uhhhhhh, not to be that person, oh well, fuck it, I will be that person, but could you please provide context to whatever subject is going on in here? Like, please elaborate on what the ARG is, provide links to it, maybe even actually discuss the theories that apparently exist.

Okay, so. I'm horrible at explaining things, but what they are talking about is the channel Doukutsu Iterations, who- in character- posts gameplay videos of a seemingly modified version of Cave Story that "generates" what are called "iterations" of the game using some kind of AI.

These videos come from different time frames, from early 2008 (Video black_fog, an iteration 1 video apparently recorded on Nov. 8 2008) to all the way up to now (Closest to now, at least, is video i6_20240530_09, which according to the title/filename, was recorded on May 30 2024). The channel's videos also take heavy influence from Pre-Reset Cave Story, which is what iterations 1 and 2 are based on.

Obviously it's very much like Petscop, what with it appearing out of nowhere, using a game engine (in this case, the Cave Story engine, probably CSE2-accurate?) to tell a rough, deliberately vague story. The in-universe owner of the channel is a Mimiga, after all. Probably from one of the "iterations". It's not an ARG, like how "wackodude47_andkunckles" [sic] is saying it is.

Checking it all out now, in Iteration 3 Part 1, the text at the beginning screams doukutsu-rs. I wouldn't be surprised if CSE2 was used. CSE1 is nothing like either of them.

But yeah, so far it's interesting. I will say, as a bit of a criticism, while some of the level design is not in line with how Pixel could do it (the builds after the beta are still very much unknown), it's not bad as far as I'm watching it. Also I kinda love the accidental tracking to where Arthur's grave would be in Part 2, whether that's a human error while making it.

EDIT: Finished watching every video, even went and read the video descriptions to see if any lore was to be dropped. ...I got nothing, lol. Literally the biggest takeaway I got from Doukutsu Iterations is that Cave Story can be... a liminal game.

Oh hey, new part just came out. Really wish something was going on in the first 13 minutes, I tried connecting it to "Fortress", because something happens at about the same time in both videos (13:22), but nothing really seems to correlate between the two. Ignore the fact that it was recorded in 2024 while "Fortress" was recorded in 2011, lmao.

Idk, I think the handicap on it being based on Cave Story isn't doing it any favors, especially for whatever is even being conveyed. Closest idea I had was that it seemed to be inspired by the whole "Internet Labyrinth" ARGs that people would make, based on Alpha and Beta versions of Minecraft, but it feels even less focused in comparison. I just know the creator is gonna look at this and wonder what I'm smoking.

 

It's actually connected, albeit loosely, to the video i2_20240530_02, which appears to have gotten stuck long, LONG before i2_20240617_01 was recorded.
