• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Do Hell times for Wii and DSI count?

Playing through the DSi and Wii Versions of the game, they both have a time attack mode and altered control layout. I was wondering if anyone believed that any of these factors made playing the game any easier, seeing as before I could barley beat it, and now my time is 3:53. So when braggong on the forums should our scores on the computer be the only ones that really matter?

I actually thought that it made it harder. I just think the keyboard is more suiting for Cave Story, for some reason.

One key distinction is that the game now runs at 60FPS. Going under the assumption that Nicalis wouldn't realize the significance of this, the new versions run at 60 frames per second while the timer runs at one second per second, and the PC version runs at 50 frames per second and the timer runs at one second per second. Theoretically, the Wii version is 20% faster than the PC version. I was able to cut down my own best time when I played Hell on the Wii, which surprised me because I had a hard time with the controls. I think this is the reason.

Fix'd.

It is definitely faster than the PC version, and this shows when you go through hell. Someone should be able to set a record on the Wii that is faster than the current record holder for the PC, since the game runs faster (but the clock still runs at the same speed).

Of course, the PC version is a bit easier than the Wii version, since the slower it is, the more reaction time you have.

Yeah, compared to the PC version it's fast as hell. You can just use your eyes or look at youtube videos to figure that one out.

I believe Noxid said somewhere that the nikumaru counter was altered on the faster versions so that times counted faster (as a function of drams rather than time), in response to a similar question I asked.
I'll have to find that post...

That most likely corresponds to when we were making the 2x resolution hack, we also looked for a way to increase the frame rate (which we pulled off successfully). The wiiware version's 290 (ni-ku-maru) counter is not sped up (it counts seconds properly), but the frame rate is still increased.

Well, with my experience on the DSi, with the attack buttons being B and X, its easy for me to alternate between the two buttons resulting in efficient rapid fire.

but it is hell, anyways. the only requirement I see is that it must be done on at least normal to count.

Actually, if the game is 20% faster, then the Spur wouls charge faster, which would make fighting Ballos faster while including the counter counting at the same rate.

Yes that would be the point. Hence wiiware times would be faster.

Rather than making them "not count", we could always have 2 records now: one for wiiware and one for PC (and one for DSi?).

I also noticed that the view always centers itself on Quote in the DSi version, giving less reaction time with those falling blocks in room 2. I'm also pretty sure that the wii and PC versions show more the the left and right as well, which makes timing and jumping and shooting really hard to manage on the DSi.

That's most likely because the DSi has a smaller screen than the PC/wii version (320×240 (640×480 for the wii, but their proportions were the same) vs 256×192) , therefore they couldn't show to the right/left because of the lower resolution.

well, if they really wanted to, they probably could - it would make everything smaller though, which may or may not be beneficial/harmful enough to justify showing more level at once
