I think the closest you could get would be recent 2D Castlevania style RPG elements, but even then it wouldn't have much place since Cave Story is so linear.

Unless you mean completely recreated and redesigned as an RPG, in which case I think it'd be great if the story were made to be a bit more deep and the characters were a little more developed for it.

Well I was thinking just the battles were RPG style, such as a game like Paper Mario, it is linear yet it is still considered an RPG.

Maybe if you switched the art style to top down instead of side scroller or did something Paper Mario like. Of course with the right tools anything is possible.

Plus I was thinking of what certain items in the game would do stuff that affects battling like when you get the Booster v2.0 or v0.8 you can attack flying enemies more easily and you wouldn't be affected by ground attacks. You could also maybe use a new move like pokemon's aerial ace.

That would be a great RPG, not sure how it would play,(Maybe like an 8 bit Dragon Quest esque game?) but it would be pretty cool.

In a way, it is an RPG, but with more focus on Side scrolling action.
