• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Anyone notice how a large number of people have complained that The Underside is a ripoff of Cave Story since it was first announced? Well Amaya disagrees with the lot of ya!

I wonder why do the people even think that an effing Metroidvania game is automatically a Cave Story knock-off, and, even if, WHY THE HELL ARE THEY COMPLAINING?? I mean, they should be happy that there are more CS-like games so that they don't have to play CS over and over again. What's wrong with- actually, nevermind. I don't want to look like I still have hope in humanity.

And isn't Cave Story just a ripoff of Metroid/Castlevania? :)
[/Sarcasm]

That's like calling Halo 3 a ripoff of the original Doom. {Maybe that's a bit extreme, but you get the idea}
Genres.

It's similarities to Cave Story are startling, but if someone was going to rip off a game, you'd think that their copy would be boring and uninspired? The Underside is neither of those things. It certainly feels like its own game.

Well.. Metroid was one of Pixel's inspirations for Cave Story.

Let's go with the Elder Scrolls, and not Halo. I think the early of both may have shared an engine.
Sure, they're made by the same company, but it's the similarities that apply to this thread.

In earlier releases TU did look a lot more like CS (nicked a couple of tiles etc.), but I was under the impression that any difficulties were ironed out now and/or nobody really cared anymore. About a year ago Arthur Lee made a post explaining his position on the TU homepage, and Shih Tzu (CS translator dude) mentioned that Pixel had already tried it and didn't have a problem with it.

Whatever, it's something to hate, and the latest release has certainly shown how much TU has improved and diversified. It comes with its own mod creator too, you guys could always try it if you want to take a break from CS Modding.

Actually, TU originally was a cs mod, but mista lee decided to make his own game. so yeh.
anyways, the only problem I've ever had with TU is the physics. They annoy me.

They annoy me too, because they're so close to Cave Story, but they're slightly wrong so I screw up because of that. Too much CS is bad for you (when you play other Metroidvania games).

It looked similar to CS in the beginning, but it had its own engine if I recall.

The physics seem quite similar to Megaman.
You know, where you can jump then move forward?

Wait, can't you do that in Cave Story?
I think it lacks momentum...
You can jump forward and let go of the arrow key and drop straight down.
In Cave Story, you just keep moving forward slightly.
It's much more fluid in CS, anyways...

It's sad, but I would enjoy The Underside more if it had Cave Story's engine, but I know that's not fair. Making your own game is infinitely better than copying someone else's, even if it's great. But it's like when you play a Super Mario remake, and the phyisics are off and you think "Man, screw this it's not Super Mario". Only The Underside isn't a remake, it's just very similar to CS.

Personally, I think the Underside is a little bit of a rip-off of cave story but I don't really have much of a problem with that.
It's still a pretty fun game to play

It's also a Megaman rip-off  but you're not complaining about that, are you?

I know this thread is four years old, but there are some people on this board that may be interested in hearing this. Arthur Lee tweeted that he completed The Underside yesterday.

I frequently lurk around on Konjak's twitter for Iconoclasts updates & saw he retweeted this. I don't know what this means, or when & if he'll release it, but when I acquire further intel I will update whoever wants to know.

Sorry for the bump :toroko2:

EDIT: So it's not finished, but from the sounds of it he's getting close to completion. I'll update when more conclusive information is at hand.
